Actress and comedian Awkwafina has responded to the criticism that she has received over her accent.
Actress Awkwafina Leaves Twitter After Being Accused Of Cultural Appropriation Following Criticism Of Her Accent
Awkwafina may be a Golden Globe winner, but her accent has been gaining more attention over the years. This is on the basis that she allegedly uses African American Vernacular English in her work, which has led to accusations of cultural appropriation.
And those claims have taken a significant toll on her mental health, which is why it looks as though she has decided to leave Twitter.
In a post to her fans on Twitter, she said: “Well, I’ll see you in a few years, Twitter – per my therapist. To my fans, thank you for continuing to love and support someone who wishes they could be a better person for you.
“I apologize if I ever fell short, in anything I did. You’re in my heart always.” This naturally had an impact on her fan base, given that she had built up such a following as a result of her movies.
She has made significant appearances across a diverse range of genres including the films ‘Oceans 8’ and ‘Shang-Chi’ to name a few.
But rather than there being any signs that Awkwafina would be taking a back seat from the entertainment industry, it looks as though she will just be avoiding Twitter.
She added: “To Clarify: I am retiring from the ingrown toenail that is Twitter. Not retiring from anything else, even if I wanted to, and I didn’t drunkenly hit someone with a shoehorn and now escaping as a fugitive.
“Also am avail on all other socials that don’t tell you to kill yourself!” It is no surprise that her fans were sad to see her go.
A certain subset of people felt that political correctness had gone too far to the point where people were just getting canceled.
One person wrote: “VERY serious question, fellow Americans. Trying to understand the extremes of political correctness. If an African American straightens their hair, or puts color in it, is that #culturalappropriation?”
