‘Janet’, the two-part documentary about legendary singer Janet Jackson will be premiering on Lifetime and A&E this month. The extended trailer dropped on New Years Day and Whoa Nellie, make sure you bring a mop because tea will be spilled!
The three-minute trailer opens with high-profile entertainers like Mariah Carey, Regina King and Samuel L. Jackson praising Jackson and her legacy while all appearing surprised that the notoriously private mom of one (or two- you’ll have to watch to see) has invited cameras in.
Janet Jackson’s Documentary Airing Late January: Star is Spilling All the Tea
With the 55 year old pop superstar being in the business since childhood, there is plenty for the documentary to cover (hence the two parts) and the trailer assures fans that at least four major controversies will be addressed
Joe Jackson’s control over his children.
Kris Jenner has nothing on Joe when it comes to parents micro-managing their children and turning the entire family into superstars. We all know from countless Michael Jackson documentaries that Joe ruled with an iron fist and in ‘Janet’ we will learn what it was like living on the periphery of the Jackson 5’s meteoric rise and insane success in the 70’s.
Janet’s secret baby.
In 1984, when Janet was a newly minted adult (at the ripe old age of 18), she eloped with James DeBarge. For those to whom the 80’s is all scrunchies and leg warmers and impossible to figure out telephones, Debarge was another band consisting of all family members (Rhythm of the Night was their biggest hit). Though Janet and James’ marriage was annulled a year later, it was widely rumored that one thing permanent came from the union- a secret child.
The headline “Janet Jackson Had Secret Baby In the 80s James DeBarge Claims”—which flashes on screen in the preview—promises this enduring rumor will finally be addressed!
Michael’s Scandals.
“Guilty by association” are the words Janet utters when asked if she believes her career suffered due to the child molestation allegations pressed against her brother, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Another quick scene shows Janet speaking with her (now) 91 year old mother, Katherine Jackson, highlighting the fact that none of the family have yet gotten over Michael’s untimely death in 2009.
Nipplegate!
The big one. It seems quite a chunk of the documentary will delve into the “wardrobe malfunction” at the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show. If you live under a rock and need context, at the end of a powerhouse performance by Janet and Justin Timberlake, Justin grabbed the cup of Janet’s bodice and yanked, exposing Janet’s breast.
While exactly zero people believed it when it explained away as a wardrobe malfunction (incidentally the event was how the term was coined)… the blame for sullying the eyes and minds of The Bible Belt was effectively thrown all on Janet and her career suffered greatly. Meanwhile, Justin’s soared.
Now we will hear in Janet’s own words all about Nipplegate…and I. CAN’T. WAIT.
And I don’t need to- not for long, anyway. Part one airs on Lifetime and A&E on Friday, January 28 at 8pm ET.
