On Friday, the world learned of actor Sidney Poitier’s death at the age of 94 years old. He was the first Black man to win an Oscar for best actor and many Black actors and actresses looked up to him for paving the way for their careers. His cause of death has not been confirmed as of yet, but the Bahamas’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fred Mitchell, did confirm his death on January 7.
Celebs: A Tribute to Poitier
Twitter was filled with loving and kind tributes to Poitier this Friday and it all began with Emmy-winning actor, Jeffrey Wright. He tweeted, “Sidney Poitier. What a landmark actor. One of a kind. What a beautiful, gracious, warm, genuinely regal man. RIP, Sir.

With love.” Whoopi Goldberg, the Oscar-winning actress, also posted on Twitter for Poitier’s memory. She wrote. “If you wanted the sky, I would write across the sky in letters that would soar a thousand feet high.. To Sir… with Love. Sir Sidney Poitier RIP. He showed us how to reach for the stars.”
Fans were very happy to see a message from Oprah Winfrey as well. She tweeted, “For me, the greatest of the “Great Trees” has fallen: Sidney Poitier. My honor to have loved him as a mentor. Friend. Brother. Confidant. Wisdom Teacher.
The utmost, highest regard and praise for his most magnificent, gracious, eloquent life. I treasured him. I adored him. He has an enormous soul I will forever cherish. Blessings to Joanna and his world of beautiful daughters.” Oprah also posted a picture with her hugging Poitier and them both smiling. It was incredibly sweet.
Nancy Sinatra is another celebrity that posted a tribute to Poitier. She wrote, “The purpose of life is not to be happy- but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it makes some difference that you lived at all.” Magic Johnson wrote, “RIP to a true gentleman, legend, and the first African-American Academy Award winner for Best Actor, Sidney Poitier.” Barack Obama also shared his thoughts about the passing of such a great actor.
He wrote, “Through his groundbreaking roles and singular talent, Sidney Poitier epitomized dignity and grace, revealing the power of movies to bring us closer together. He also opened doors for a generation of actors. Michelle and I send our love to his family and legion of fans.”
