Dukuray’s niece, her husband and 3 children all perished in the fire and Cardi’s financial aid is God sent. The state of New York announced this week that it would be granting US$2 million to a fund for the victims.
The blaze, the deadliest in NY in 3 decades, broke out on the morning of January 9. Investigators determined the fire was caused by a defective space heater that burst into flames. Smoke then spread through the building as a result of two malfunctioning self-closing doors, causing deaths throughout the building.
The fire was largely confined to one apartment and all of the persons killed in the fire died from smoke inhalation. Several of the dozens critically injured were badly burned.
