It has been a tough start to December for Nick Cannon and Alyssa Scott. They are now mourning the death of their 5-month-old son, Zen. Their son suddenly died on December 5th from a brain tumor. Cannon and Scott are going through an intense amount of grief right now, but he did want to talk to his fans about what he is feeling right now.
Cannon Opens Up
Cannon recently opened up to People Magazine about how he is feeling right now. He knows that he and Alyssa want to do everything they can to keep the memory of their son alive. When Zen was first born, they had a lot of worries about his calm breathing patterns. There were just a lot of things that seemed off with him.
Nick Cannon’s Devastating Loss
Nick said, “It sounded like he had fluid in his lungs, like a sinus infection or something. The doctors didn’t think it to be anything too concerning.” A few weeks after bringing this to the doctors’ attention, they also noticed that his head was “growing a little too quickly.”
At the age of two months old, Zen was diagnosed with a high-grade glioma, which is a very rare form of brain cancer. This is also a very aggressive form of brain cancer. These tumors are generally found in the spinal cord and brain and they grow and spread fast. They are also very tough to treat. When the doctors went to treat his tumors, they tried to drain the fluid in his brain and alleviate pressure, but it was too late and the tumors kept growing.
Cannon told People, “We started asking, ‘Is there a way to prevent this? If not, how long do we have?’ The conversation quickly turned to, ‘How can we give him the best life for the time that he does have?’ It could be weeks, it could be months, it could be years.” The couple did not want to pursue any invasive treatments since he was so young.
He continued, “We were having quality-of-life conversations. We could have had that existence where he would’ve had to live in the hospital, hooked up to machines, for the rest of the time. From someone who’s had to deal with chemotherapy before, I know that pain. To see that happen to a 2-month-old, I didn’t want that. I didn’t want him to suffer.”
The couple made it their goal to create moments for Zen every day that was filled with joy. They had a celebration of his birthday every month and they even went to Disneyland. On December 5, he passed away with Alyssa and Nick there with him. They know he was a blessing, but they are still devastated.
