Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin reportedly discharged a prop gun that killed the director of photographer on the set of his new film, “Rust.” Halyna Hutchins, 42, died was shot by the actor and later died from her injuries at a nearby hospital while director Joel Souza is currently at a hospital getting treatment for his.
This has prompted a lot of critics to wonder if Baldwin will be taking a much-needed break from the spotlight following this horrible tragedy. Here’s what you need to know.
Critics React To Halyna Hutchins’ Death: Is Alec Baldwin Long Overdue For A Break From Hollywood?
Local authorities in Sante Fe, New Mexico, where the film was being filmed, says no charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation remains active. However, The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) said in a statement to union members that the prop gun had a live round in it.
According to Variety, the says, ““A live single round was accidentally fired on set by the principal actor, hitting both the Director of Photography, Local 600 member Halyna Hutchins, and Director Joel Souza,” the union told members. “Both were rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, we lost Sister Hutchins who passed from the wound.”
Meanwhile, Baldwin took to his Twitter account to write, “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.”
Of course, it didn’t take long at all for critics to weigh in on the matter. Many of them took to social media to write, “This is so tragic for everyone involved. I feel for Halyna and her family, it’s just so unbelievably tragic. And I can’t begin to imagine how Alec must be feeling, he will have to live with this for the rest of his life.
Apparently he kept saying afterwards ‘Why was I handed a hot gun?”” along with, “So awful! I live near the location and a friend of mine had her kids on set a few days ago as extras. The local film community it tight knit here and this is devastating. Also why would real loaded guns be on set?! No workplace should have those around, especially film sets with kids and lots of people around.”
Another critic write, “I don’t own guns, but I was always taught to treat anything that looked realistic like a real gun by my parents and follow the basic safety protocols. The same should be done on movie sets with actors. What a shame and a waste, both for this young woman’s lost life and the people who will have to carry the guilt of the harm done.”
