Alec Baldwin has come out and stressed that there should be compulsory police presence on film sets in order to monitor the use of firearms.
Alec Baldwin Calls For The Compulsory Presence Of Police On Set
The Hollywood actor’s gun prop incident on the set of ‘Rust,’ which led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the injury of director Joel Souza, has raised the question of whether there should be any firearms present on movie sets.
And one way in which Alec wants to prevent this from happening again is to make the producers and movie creators bear the cost of any police presence.
In a post to his fans on Instagram, he said: “Every film/TV set that uses guns, fake or otherwise, should have a police officer on set, hired by the production, to specifically monitor weapons safety.”
The response on social media was mixed. Although many understood the fact that something had to be done to prevent any further tragedies, in addition to the fact that such a decision might give Halyna’s family some closure, others did not choose to see it that way.
They felt that Alec was only coming out with this proposition because of his own experience. In any event, there were experts on ‘Rust.’ They simply did not prevent the accident from happening.
One fan wrote: “Is that not what an armour guard does? Someone just didn’t do their job right! Has nothing to do with cops checking.”
Regardless of whether you agree with Alec’s stance, some production sets have already taken steps to put measures in place. ABC’s “The Rookie” has already stated that it would no longer have the use of real firearms on its set.
But rather than going a step further and ensuring that there is police presence throughout, they have instead chosen to use fake weapons.
In this way, they are trying to find a balance between keeping everybody safe and making sure that there is no realism lost throughout any scenes.
If people feel that is not adequate enough, the only sensible option would be to make sure that all people on the set are given some sort of firearms training. That way, there could be no excuses going forward if something were to go wrong.
