There’s been a lot of people talking #FreeBritney lately. This is especially true with the recent developments. Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, was removed from the Conservatorship and there’s a path to possibly ending it all together. Whether that will ultimately happen, who knows? What we do know is, there’s a lot of people rooting for the singer. One of them happens to be a fellow Disney alum. Let’s talk about this person had to say about the situation and why it might have gotten so tricky for Britney.
Talking #FreeBritney
So, the latest to come out in support of #FreeBritney is Christy Carlson Romano. The actress and singer played Ren Stevens on the Disney series Even Stevens. She’s also starred in movies like Cadet Kelly for the channel, as well as being in some Cutting Edge movies.
These days, the actress is doing walking vlogs talking about her career, her struggles, and more. In her latest, she decided to get into the Britney situation. The actress talked a bit about how they both came through the Disney Machine, as she called it.
However, she was quick to point out the Disney Machine isn’t what a lot of people think it is. Meaning that things similar to the old Hollywood Studio System no longer exist. But there’s still a lot that can come with stardom, and it’s even trickier in their cases. Why?

One of the things Romano touched on is how complicated child stardom can be. Especially when one’s family is basically on the payroll. Romano talked a bit about how her own parents were involved in her career for a while and that it changed the family dynamic.
She spoke about how it flips the roles, where the child is the boss. And it makes it less likely for a child to listen when a parent tries to give advice. Romano said this Conservatorship likely caused a lot of the same damage, and we’ve seen evidence of that. In one of her statements, Spears pointed out that the assistants and all work for her, not her family. And the fans are her fans, not her family’s.
During the chat, Romano spoke about her hopes for Britney and the family now that it looks like the situation is finally coming to an end. Mainly, that Britney finds peace and she and her family find some way to heal from the damage and trauma in their relationship.
Why #FreeBritney is important
If there’s one part that drove the point of the #FreeBritney movement home, it was when Romano spoke about celebrity and how young stardom is particularly damaging. History is filled with child stars who were judged harshly as adults, and Britney was no exception. As she grew into an adult, she’s made mistakes, and Romano pointed out how human it is to do so. There’s just one problem.
She said that, as a culture, we’ve been programmed to idolize. So, celebrities often get put on these huge pedestals that one can’t possibly live up to. That’s definitely something we should all keep in mind. Not just for celebrities, who are just people, too, but for everyone we encounter.
