NBC ‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers: What’s journalistic ethics?

‘Days of Our Lives (DOOL)’ spoilers reveal Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) is a newsman. In fact, we remember hearing Jennifer Horton (Melissa Reeves) talk about how he taught her what she knows. This could be a problem, in our opinion. It seems he might be running more of a rag than a legit publication. Let’s take a look at why Jack might want to take a step back for a while.

NBC ‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Red flag

First off, the Friday, September 3rd episode reminded us of something that happened a while back. Remember when Tripp Dalton (Lucas Adams) was facing potential charges for the rape of Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold)? He didn’t do it, but Allie was in no state at the time to remember that it was actually Tripp’s brother who committed the crime. All she knew was, he was in her room that night and she has a baby that has his DNA.

However, since the DNA only proves they slept together and not that there was force, Tripp ended up not getting charged. We remember Jack’s paper labeling Tripp a rapist in a story about the charges that won’t happen. That was a huge journalism faux pas.

If there’s an accusation, one is supposed to say “accused rapist”. Even if Tripp was proven to be the one who did it, they would have had to add “convicted” there. Because outright saying “rapist” opens one up to legal trouble. Especially if said conviction gets overturned. But apparently Jack hasn’t learned any lessons from how that turned out.

NBC ‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Repeat offender

This time, Days of Our Lives spoilers indicate it was Xander Cook (Paul Telfer) facing scandalous headlines. Jack wrote a scathing editorial in which he labeled Xander a dealer and accused EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerrigel) of being a corrupt lawyer who perverted the justice system.

Okay, the second part was kind of truth. But, still. There were no charges and no conviction. So outright calling Xander a dealer was, as pointed out in the episode by EJ, a possible libel suit. And Tripp would have had one, too. So that’s not a good recent track record for protecting the paper legally. There’s another problem, though.

NBC ‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Objectivity

Another major rule of journalism is objectivity. At least, it’s supposed to be. While the ethics have been blurred these days in the name of sales and ratings, the main principals of what it’s supposed to be remain true. It’s generally a good practice, no matter what you’re writing, to avoid conflicts of interest. And what’s more of one than an angry father unloading his fury in an editorial directed at a former friend he believes wronged his daughter?

We think it’s time for Jack to find something else to occupy his time with for a while. Because he clearly can’t keep personal stuff separate from his work. And, honestly, he just made himself into a fool with that article. Because once he has the whole story on this, he should regret putting pen to paper.

As a published and accomplished writer, she knows how to get into the minds of the writers and is usually bang on in predicting plot twists before they come to life.
