We’re not going to beat around the bush on this — Malverde: El Santo Patrón Spoilers are huge fans of Robin Hood and Zorro lore, and the new Telemundo show, Malverde: El Santo Patrón (Malverde: The Patron Saint in English) really scratches our itch.

It’s based on the Mexican folklore hero Jesus Malverde and is portrayed by Pedro Fernández.

It’s touching on his believe history as being part of Yoreme and Spanish heritage that’s struggling against the corrupt governor as well as the local wealthy and crooked tycoon Herminio Quiñones (Luis Felipe Tovar).

Since the first episode set the stage, there was some great action where Malverde’s raid went wrong and his best friend and brother to the love of Malverde’s life was injured and captured.

Malverde: El Santo Patrón Spoilers: Possible angles

As well as having to now rescue his friend, Nazario Aguilar (Alejandro Nones), he’s also going to be the bain of Herminio as Malverde will attempt to stop his power grab.

Taking place in 1910 (a year after the fabled Malverde reportedly passed away) in Mexico’s state Sinaloa, Herminio purchased a bunch of land and rerouted the railroad through his land and stopping at his ranch.

This will make the local town of San Blas De Baca a ghost town. To add insult to injury, San Blas De Baca is Malverda’s hometown.

San Blas is also having some internal strife as the electricity was supposed to go to the town, but because Herminio paid the most money to bring the new invention there, he gets it first.

A school teacher, Professor Matías Galavis (Alan Slim) isn’t happy about it, but he’s quickly reminded of the caste system in place.

Malverde: El Santo Patrón Spoilers: Personal tie ins

It was revealed later in the episode that Malverde, as a young boy, watched his father be executed by firing squad on the orders of Herminio.

They focused on his rings as he gave the order, and we saw them earlier when Herminion walked in on his wife in bed with Malverde just slipping out without being seen.

This is something that’s been used often in the past, but it’s always fun when done right and it’s a nugget we can’t wait to see unfold as it raises other questions.

While Hermanio doesn’t know who his wife’s lover is, there’s every chance that Malverde knows Hermanio is the one that executed his father.

It makes sense that he would’ve made sure to learn Herminio’s name, and that could be why he became a bandit looking to bring him down.

This was a great start to the show with plenty of history and storylines that’d take us all day to unpack, and Malverde: El Santo Patrón Spoilers can’t wait to see what’s to come.

What’s your favorite part of the Malverde legend? We’re just starting our journey into learning about him and would love to hear your thoughts on the folklore and the show in the comments below.
