‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers finds that Lydia Plath spotted brother Ethan Plath at the autoshop where she had a job interview. They hadn’t spoken in a few months, ever since Ethan decided that he and wife Olivia needed to go no-contact with his family because of reasons that weren’t entirely clear.
The Plaths maintain that he and Olivia were causing division within the family, specifically within the older siblings (since Micah and Moriah have already broken away) and they didn’t want them causing any more division within the family… though it’s not really clear how they were doing that, exactly? Either way, Season 2 ended with Ethan saying goodbye to his siblings until they turned 18.
‘Welcome to Plathville’: Well, at least that was the idea.
Cue a few months later, and Lydia applies at the auto shop where all of her other older siblings have had jobs before her (the owner knows the Plath family by name) and what to her wondering eyes should appear but her older brother, Ethan, he was working on his Plymouth in the garage because I guess the owner is cool like that and lets Ethan tool around with his own cars there if he feels like it.
When Lydia seen Ethan, you could tell that it was all she could do to hold it in and keep from crying. A lot of people online have speculated that since Barry is often in Tallahassee working, that Ethan was more like a Dad to the siblings than Barry was, and in a way we can kind of see that.
Sometimes within big families it’s not uncommon for older siblings to take on surrogate parent roles. We’ve recently gotten to know a bit more about Ethan and Lydia’s relationship, she said that when Ethan lived at home she and him would often tool around in the garage together and fix cars, which might would explain her fascination with Ethan and wanting to spend time with him.
Maybe she just wanted a taste of the good ol’ days back, before her siblings were out of the house and before Ethan was married off, before Olivia ever entered the picture. Sometimes, one longs for a time that’s far more innocent, even when one realizes that those times are long gone.
When Lydia got home, of course Mom Kim Plath asked her how the interview went, and of course, Lydia told her about seeing Ethan. She said that Ethan himself hadn’t mentioned anything “too personal” (Ethan had said in his own confessional that it was a little awkward seeing Lydia again), but she did mention that they were thinking of moving.
When Kim described Lydia and Ethan potentially hanging out she had an air of resignation and said that as long as Ethan and Olivia don’t cause division within the family (again, what does that mean exactly?) that they are okay with those two having a relationship. Lydia says that she feels like the bridge between her parents and Ethan and Olivia and that she hopes she doesn’t break. Poor Lydia. Stay tuned!!!
