‘Dancing With The Stars’ is breaking barriers for its 30th season with newly ‘out’ pop-star JoJo Siwa competing as part of the first same-sex pairing on the US version of the show.
The full cast for the show’s newest season will be announced on September 8, but ABC gave a sneak peak by announcing that Siwa will be dancing. The second competing celebrity they announced early is freshly home from the Tokyo Olympics, gold medal winning gymnast, Suni Lee.
Though the celebrities do not know yet who they will be paired with- they will find out this coming Thursday- we do know Siwa, who identifies as gay and queer will be dancing with a female dancer. The 18-year-old is keeping her fingers crossed for Lindsay Arnold, Jenna Johnson or Britt Stewart.
‘Dancing With The Stars’ JoJo Siwa to compete with female dance partner.
Though the same-sex coupling is “groundbreaking” for the US show, Australia’s Dancing with the Stars had a male/male partnering in their season 16, though one of the males in the equation was usually dancing as his drag alter ego- Courtney Act.
Runner up of season 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Courtney danced with pro partner Joshua Keefe, but during one number, Courtney’s drag came off and Shane Jenek was revealed, making it the first time in the show’s history that two men (who presented male) performed a number together. Courtney/Shane came runner up on the show (yup, again!)
Siwa is ecstatic for her same-sex pairing, understanding the gravity of viewers seeing two women dancing together.
“I think it breaks a wall that’s never been broken down before,” Siwa said. “It’s normal for a girl to dance with a guy, and I think that’s really cool, but it’s really special that now not only do I get to share with the world that you get to love who you love, but also you get to dance with who you want to dance with.”
The YouTube personality added, “I want to make it OK for the people who come after me.”
Though it seems the same-sex pairing would be the most controversial part of ABC’s announcement, its Siwa’s strong dance background that has fans of the competition show crying foul.
Siwa first came to the public’s attention as a member of the prestigious Abbey Lee Dance Company on Lifetime’s Dance Moms.
The most famous ex-student of Abbey Lee Miller is Maddie Ziegler who stared in Sia’s music videos. Her younger sister, Mackenzie Ziegler, also a ABLC alum recently came third on Fox’s The Masked Dancer. She was edged out by DWTS pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy (who came second) and Olympic gold medal winning gymnast, Gabby Douglas.
It seems we may have a good competition on our hands.
