Could Meghan Markle have been right about all of the racism she endured while in England? That’s what a lot of fans are asking themselves as three England players of color – Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukaya Saka have been getting a lot of racist abuse online following the Euro 2020 final, in which Italy beat England in a penalty shootout.
All three players missed penalties in the 3-2 shootout loss and were targeted on social media after the game. Both teams drew 1-1 after extra time and Italy won the shootout 3-2, with England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka – who are players of color – missing their penalty kicks.

They have been targeted with racial abuse online and on social media. England’s Football Association has since released a statement about the matter, condemning the racist abuse.
“The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media,” the statement said.
“We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behavior is not welcome in following the team. We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.”
Of course, it didn’t take long at all for critics to weigh in on the matter on social media. Many of them commented with, “It really is too easy for anyone to make a fake profile for the purpose of posting racist and other vile hate filled messages. Social media companies urgently need to tackle this problem and take accountability and responsibility for their platforms and those who use them,” along with, “So is anyone actually surprised that the players received racist abuse? I’d have been personally surprised if they hadn’t received racist abuse. Heck, they were getting booed before games for making an anti-racism gesture. The Daily Mail, The Sun, etc will likely add to it.”
Another critic wrote, “Ridiculous! And no matter what, these guys are elite athletes making millions. The yobs attacking them will never be as good at anything! The whole team played incredibly well. If you can’t be a fan after a loss then don’t be a fan!”
