The Britney Spears conservatorship drama continued on July 14th. Ever since her testimony at a prior hearing, a lot has been going on behind the scenes. Recently, several key players in this whole thing have resigned their positions.
One, in fact, said they were stepping aside because they were not made aware that Spears didn’t want the conservatorship anymore. So, when a special hearing was called to replace her departing attorney, we had a feeling things were about to get real. They did.
Support for Britney Spears
Prior to the hearing, several major moves took place. First, her co-conservator of the person, Jodi Montgomery, filed papers that challenged the things Jamie Spears said in his own filing. T
hat was a request for an investigation into Britney’s allegations of being forced into medical care against her will and being overworked and controlled.
Montgomery denied most of what Jamie Spears wrote and said that Britney Spears, in fact, had asked her father’s communication with her to be cut off.
The second big move was Lynne Spears. Following talk Britney had chosen an attorney, Lynne filed papers saying Britney should be able to choose her counsel. She claimed Britney is not in the same place mentally that she was in 2008, and should not be held to 2008 standards.
Thirdly, the ACLU stepped in. They filed papers relating to her request to hire her own attorney. The organization claimed that it is a constitutional right and is an issue of autonomy as well. It looks like these efforts paid off.
A win for Britney Spears
The conservatorship battle has been a long one, and has come with some losses. However, she won in court on Wednesday. Her request to hire her own attorney was granted. Her choice, apparently, is a former federal prosecutor.
Reports indicate she was in talks prior to the hearing today with Mathew Rosengart, who was, in fact, approved as her new attorney. This was a huge victory for Spears, as those in the #FreeBritney movement said this would be the first step to getting her father out of her conservatorship. And that’s apparently what Britney intends to do.
Britney Spears comes out fighting
The singer didn’t pull any punches in court. According to multiple reports, she said she was “extremely scared” of her father and claimed he’s used the situation to, “ruin my life.”
To that end, she also asked that he be investigated for Conservatorship abuse. She also added that she believed the goal of all the control exerted over her in the arrangement was quote, “to make me feel crazy, and I’m not.”
Whatever the outcome in the future, we’re hoping today’s events help Britney Spears to feel safe and regain her independence.
