The cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ are singing a heart song to their fans after learning the show has been cancelled after 2 seasons.
The show with an interesting premise centers around Zoey Clarke (Jane Levy) a 20-something computer programmer who has been recently promoted to engineering manager.
That in itself—women working hard and succeeding in a male dominated industry—should have ears perking up, but it’s far from what makes Zoey so unique.
‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Cast Won’t Take ‘Cancelled’ for an Answer
Zoey can hear other’s inner thoughts and desires- and most often pain- in the form of song. Usually the singer needs some sort of help, and Zoey does her best after interpreting their “heart song”.
Though it sounds extremely fantastical the premise was born from creator, Austin Winsberg wishing he could communicate with his father who was suffering from a rare neurological disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), leaving him unable to move or speak.
The first season of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist centered around just that, with Zoey able to hear her ailing father -played by Broadway and screen great, Peter Gallagher through his heart songs.
Of course there is work, friendships, family, relationships…and killer dance numbers for Zoey to navigate, too. All in all, it’s a delightful show, filled with powerhouse voices like those of Skylar Astin, Bernadette Peters and Alex Newell.
Seemingly the awards committees agreed with the show winning a 2020 Emmy Outstanding Choreography For Scripted Programming and was the only network show to earn a Golden Globe nomination in 2021 for Levy in the Best Actress – Television Series, Musical or Comedy category.
Unfortunately NBC/Peacock didn’t share the love. But Winsberg and his cast are not taking the cancelation lying down. Doing their best to get #saveZoeysplaylist trending, Levy, Astin, Peters and Hollywood royalty, Mary Steenbergen, who plays Zoey’s mother, have all tweeted out, asking for fans support.
Twitter responded, making the hashtag the #1 trending topic on the platform. A Change.org petition is circulating and fans everywhere are begging that, if NBC wont budge (though Winsberg assured fans “they are listening”) then Netflix or another streaming platform pick up the joyful and different-from-everything-else-on-tv (now that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has gone)show.
Only time will tell what the ultimate fate will be, but if you don’t want to see Zoey go away for good- get yourself on Twitter and start hashtagging away!
