This week’s Maurice Benard’s State of Mind featured a fellow General Hospital actor (Sonny Corinthos), Brianna Nicole Henry (Jordan Ashford). The conversation dealt with bullying, depression, and more. Let’s take a look at the episode, what we noticed about the timing, as well as the reaction.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind welcomes Brianna
This week’s guest, as we mentioned, plays Jordan on GH, which made this episode a fun watch. Usually, these two are more antagonistic, as they’re on opposite sides of the law.
Sure, they formed a bit of an alliance over Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober), but there’s still that underlying tension. You know this partnership can’t last, and it will likely be ugly.
With the actors, though, there was nothing but love and respect for each other. The chat flowed so naturally, you can see they have a real friendship as well as a working relationship. We think, too, that’s what makes State of Mind work so well.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind previews what was to come?
We found this episode of Maurice Benard’s State of Mind interesting for another reason in retrospect. GH, like other soaps, films in advance. And if you saw this Tuesday’s episode, you know that race played a part in the story as Jordan dealt with the aftermath of Cameron Webber’s (William Lipton) actions.
We can’t help but wonder if the chat was scheduled to post close to this episode, because these come out every Sunday.
Why do we wonder this? Because Brianna talked about her experiences with bullying and racism in school. Particularly once she got to private school. She also discussed being a multi-racial child, as well as well how a doctor once reacted to her visiting a relative because of that.
But, as always, the conversation turned to mental health and we loved that he acknowledged how little attention depression gets when compared to bi-polar and anxiety.
So, he and Brianna discussed her own struggles with depression. We couldn’t help but notice a bonding over Benard saying sleeping was the only time he was happy.
She nodded to his statement. Later, she spoke about a time prior to GH where she was dealing with it and eventually went to therapy. She spoke about taking an all-around approach with regular sessions, meditation, as well as dietary changes. Check out the chat to see more about this, as well as talking about her love life.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: The reaction
Fans, as usual, love it. The topics usually generate a lot of strong responses, and we believe this is because he deals with such universal issues.
Most people have dealt with some degree of mental illness, and they also have to deal with the everyday issues the actors speak of facing as well.
One fan said, “Ms. Henry has brought enormous gravity to the role of Jordan on GH and she’s always a powerful and complex presence on screen. Many thanks for bringing her on to share her story. The value of these discussions cannot be overstated.”
Another added, “I can do relate to her story too. I had a bipolar mother and an alcoholic dad. It was easy to over look my own issues because I was too busy being a care taker or navigating their storms. When I left home as a teen the anxiety and depression couldn’t be ignored or covered up.”
Stay tuned to see who is next of State of Mind.
