Recently, Piers Morgan quit Good Morning Britain over some remarks directed toward Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview that people are interpreting as racist. Some people don’t understand why they’re being interpreted as racist, because they think that Piers was simply trying to point out a more innocent side of the argument and perhaps absolve the Royal Family of the shame of the label of racism.
So far, a lot of the older generation doesn’t understand why Piers’ argument is inherently wrong, so, here’s my interpretation of it.
Why people are cancelling Piers Morgan?
Piers is putting his patriotic feelings above his feelings of empathy, above all he is a proud British subject and he doesn’t want to think that the monarchy could be as cruel as to stoop to something as low and as base as racism, especially in the year 2021. (Apparently Piers forgot to read a lot of history books, but I digress.)
But the fact of the matter is, they have. It’s one thing to wonder aloud whether a child will look more like the Mother or the Father, but if Harry had dated and married a white, latino, or asian girl, would skin color still be a topic of discussion? Chances are, no, it just came up because Meghan happens to be biracial, in this case, half African American.
That is racist because that is something that no one can help, and with all the history of questionably race-related things that have gone on with British Colonizers in the past, it just smacks of a more prejudiced, uglier time in history, a time that no one wants to be reminded of.
Yes, put it in the history books because it never needs to be repeated, but also, leave it there. The way the question was put to Harry was really offensive, because it would not have been a question at all had his wife not been biracial. It’s not fair, to her, or to him, you can’t help who you fall in love with and furthermore, no one ever asks to be born, so it was almost like the royal family was asking, “So, how much will be wrong with this one?”
Like being biracial is a bad thing.
The reason Piers Morgan is being cancelled is because through his explaination of the Royal Family’s actions, he’s trying to find justification for it when there is none. If the question was meant as innoffensively as Piers took it, then Harry wouldn’t have been uncomfortable with it, Meghan wouldn’t have felt like she didn’t want to be alive anymore because of it.
These experiences were traumatic and embarassing, and we don’t need people like Piers Morgan trying to sweep it under the rug by excusing that kind of behavior. Most therapists will tell a victim, “You know your reality.” when they’re being gaslit. Piers Morgan was lighting the flame, in this instance.
The lesson that the royal family needs to learn from this is to do better, they need to come forward and take responsibility, whomever said it, and sincerely apologize for making Harry and Meghan feel that way.
Queen Elizabeth issued a statement saying that they would be handling it as a family, and maybe they will, but I’m not sure that anything will actually get better between them. As for Piers Morgan, he needs to realize that just because you sweep something under the rug doesn’t mean it’s not there. Stay tuned!
