Absolutely Fabulous actress Joanna Lumley finds all of the royal drama and gossip circulating Buckingham Palace “ghastly.” As a matter of fact, the multi-talented star, who is also a good friend of Prince Charles, says that she will never watch the Netflix drama, The Crown. Here’s what you need to know.

While millions of viewers from both sides of the pond have tuned in to watch the Netflix drama about the trials and tribulations of life behind doors at Buckingham Palace, Joanna Lumley would rather not.

Joanna, who is currently appearing on the Chopper’s Politics podcast for The Telegraph, was asked if she had watched the series or if she would ever make a guest appearance and her answer was a flat out no.

She said, “No, I didn’t watch it. Lots of people love it and lots of people know it’s mostly made up, but lots of people don’t know it’s made up which is awful.”

“I find it all ghastly,” she added.

Joanna and Prince Charles have been friends for many years. She is also an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust, a youth charity that helps young people who are struggling to find jobs.

“Well, some people say ‘Oh everybody knows it’s made up’ – they don’t, they think it’s the truth,” Joanna explained. “I couldn’t watch it because I feel if you don’t disagree with something you don’t watch it and go ‘oooh I hate that.’ Just don’t watch it.”

With that said, the British government still wants Netflix to remind viewers that the show is only loosely based on fact.

“It’s a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that,” said Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden. “Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.”
