British Royal Family News find that Meghan Markle has something to celebrate this week. The Duchess of Sussex has won her privacy battle against a U.K. tabloid over a personal letter that she wrote to her father, Thomas Markle, Sr., during the summer of 2018.
The royal sued Associated Newspapers after it printed extracts of a handwritten letter she sent to her estranged father. Here’s what you need to know.
British Royal Family News: Meghan Markle Wins Privacy Battle Against U.K. Tabloid Over Thomas Markle Letter
According to reports, The Duchess of Sussex won her High Court privacy claim against the Mail on Sunday over the publication of a “personal and private” handwritten letter written to her father.
Although it’s been noted that the copyright aspect will still be decided at a trial, with a further hearing in March.
In his judgment Lord Justice Warby found for Meghan in her claim for misuse of private information against the AN, Ltd, publishers of the Mail on Sunday and Mail Online, over five articles published in February 2019, which included extracts from the letter.
He said: “It was, in short, a personal and private letter. The majority of what was published was about the claimant’s own behavior, her feelings of anguish about her father’s behavior – as she saw it – and the resulting rift between them. These are inherently private and personal matters.”
Lord Justice Warby continued, “The claimant had a reasonable expectation that the contents of the letter would remain private. The Mail articles interfered with that reasonable expectation.”
However, the papers had claimed the articles, two of which appeared in the Mail on Sunday and three on MailOnline, allowed Thomas Markle to respond to comments made by Meghan‘s anonymous friends in interviews given to People magazine.
Meghan Markle has said that any money she wins will be donated to an anti-bullying charity. So far she has not made any additional comments about the matter.
