British Royal Family News says that Meghan Markle made some pretty bold comments about social media users, likening them to drug addicts. Here’s what you need to know.
Meghan made the comparison during Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Next Gen Virtual Summit this week. It was an online event that was reserved for invited guests who were willing to pay a $1,750 fee to hear her speak.
British Royal Family News: Meghan Markle Says Social Media Users Are Like Drug Addicts
While the Duchess of Sussex certainly opened up about a lot of different topics, it was her remarks about social media that got everyone’s attention the most. She said, “There are very few things in this world where you call the person who’s engaging with ‘a user.’ People who are addicted to drugs are called users and people who are on social media are called users.”
Meghan added, “There is something algorithmically that is in there that is creating this obsession that I think is very unhealthy for a lot of people. I have a lot of concerns for people that have become obsessed with it and it is so much a part of our daily culture for so many people that it is an addiction.”
The Duchess of Sussex also made it pretty clear that she’s not interested in opening up any new Instagram or Twitter accounts in the future. Now that she’s gotten a little taste of how life is offline, she prefers to keep it that way.
“I had a personal account years ago, which I closed down, and then we had one through the institution and our office that was in the U.K. that wasn’t managed by us—that was a whole team—and so I think that comes with the territory for the job you have,” Meghan said. “I’ve made a personal choice to not have any account, so I don’t know what’s out there, and in many ways that’s helpful for me.”
