TLC ‘Doubling Down with the Derricos’ spoilers reveal the most emotional episode of Doubling Down with the Derricos, the Deon Derrico, Dad Extrordinaire, finally broke down. He was helping his Mom with her hair, which I thought was such a nice thing to do, and she started talking to him about going with Karen to little Dawsyn’s surgery and simply being there for them.
Deon maintained that he was probably not going to go, but he didn’t take a really hard line about it, instead you could tell that he was just trying to politely decline his way out of the situation but GiGi kept on, and that’s when he started staring off into space. At first it looked like he was checking out, but he wasn’t.
TLC ‘Doubling Down with the Derricos’ Spoilers: Instead, Deon was tryin not to break down.
On television, they rarely show a Father’s grief. When there’s the death or endangerment of a child, all eyes are on the Mother, watching the Mother, checking to see if she’s okay. No one ever really thinks about how a Father deals with grief.
Deaon said of his late son Carter, that when he was born he didn’t want to hold him knowing he was going to die. He has a bond with all of his children and he didn’t want that bond with Carter if it didn’t get to go on. He said in in this situation his mind keeps making comparisons between Dawsyn and Carter, and while he has held Dawsyn, you can tell that he is still very much afraid that she is going to die and he will be left with that bond… without a child to attach it to.
I’m glad that TLC chose to focus on his grief, I’m glad that it was brought to light how a Father feels in these situations because in so much media, their grief is largely glossed over. You don’t get to know how a man feels over losing a child, because they’re expected to be so stoic.
Deon ended up breaking down over his babies, and while no man wants to cry, I’ll back up the sentiments of General Norman Schwarzkopf when I say that even a General can cry, and a man who doesn’t cry frankly scares me a little bit.
Especially in a situation like this, this is his family, of course he’s going to break down. I’m glad he had GiGi to be there for him, because sometimes even a big tough Dad needs a hug from their Mom. You could see the stress melt off him, and in the end, he decided to go and support Karen and Dawsyn at the hospital during her surgery. Thank God for Gigi. Stay tuned!!!
