Love Island news has sadly been the latest casualty due to the coronavirus, with bosses at the ITV show revealing on Monday afternoon that the series will not be taking place this year. There had been hopes that the summer series could be salvaged, with potential calls for the show to be filmed in Cornwall.
However, these reports that aired over the weekend have fallen flat, as it was officially announced that the show will not be returning until next year. The cancellation will come as a huge blow for reality fans across the world, while the ITV finances are expected to be hit hard by the cancellation, as it is one of the broadcaster’s biggest shows of the year.
Love Island News: Bosses Make The Announcement
Kevin Lygo made the announcement on Monday afternoon in the United Kingdom. In the statement, he revealed that they had done everything possible to press ahead with plans of the show, but ultimately they had no choice but to cancel the upcoming series. Rumours that the show were in danger have been widespread since the lockdown in the UK was announced.
There had been hope that the series would continue as planned but at a later date. The idea that the series could begin in August was muted, while the bosses did originally set aside a date in November to complete the series. Bosses admitted that the decision to cancel the series was down to bosses putting the health and safety of contestants and workers at the forefront.
Love Island News: Huge Financial Loss To ITV
The application process had been hugely popular among contestants, with the announcement that more people had signed up during lockdown than any other six-week period ever. However, it is unclear whether those applications will now be forwarded to the next series. The price of losing Love Island will be huge to ITV, with the broadcaster likely to lose out on tens of millions of pounds.
The show makes a huge amount due to the commercial deals that are in place, but that will not be the case this year. However, the soap’s winter host Laura Whitmore has promised that the show will return in 2021 bigger and better than ever.
