BBC America Doctor Who spoilers indicate we have another decent episode to add to the list. Leading up to the two-part finale that starts next week, we saw finally saw another reference to the Timeless Child and the situation The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) faces on Gallifrey. But, this episode mostly gave us a look at our companions and their fears. Here’s what you need to know.

BBC America Doctor Who Spoilers: The plot

This one delved into familiar territory for such shows. We’ve seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed deal with fear, as well as others. Doctor Who chose to use a couple of deities to give us the insight into these characters. They delved into Yasmin Khan’s (Mandip Gill) insecurity in the past and the day things changed for her, for one. We also saw the effect all this time traveling has on Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) and a friend he barely knows anymore. And Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh) also gets a better moment, as he ends up confiding to The Doctor he fears for his health.

Most of the story was dealt with in nightmares, which Zellin (Ian Gelder) was feeding to his fellow deity, Rakaya (Clare-Hope Ashitey), as she thrives on fear. They manage to trick The Doctor into freeing her so they can use Earth as her personal feeding ground. Eventually, the situation gets resolved, but there’s an issue.

BBC America Doctor Who Spoilers: The bad

As the episode draws to the end, The Doctor ends up resolving things a little too quick and easy. It felt seriously anti-climatic to watch after a long, creepy build up to what looked to be unbeatable beings ready to feast on earth. Sadly, this season and the previous is marked with missed opportunities and disappointments. We’re used to it by now, so it didn’t bother as much as it maybe should have.

BBC America Doctor Who Spoilers: The good

Again, we applaud the creepiness of the beings and what they did. We also loved Graham and his admission. It’s one of the few genuine and meaty moments he’s had, and we think they were wrong with how they’ve handled him most of the season. To add in his survivor’s guilt over not saving his love in the beginning is even better.

Also interesting is Ryan’s wrapup moment. Doctor Who spoilers hint this could be a prelude to change. At one point, he expresses a bit of guilt and dissatisfaction with traveling. He talks about how everyone else is living their lives, and he and the others are missing it. We applaud the writers for exploring that side of things, as none of the other companions over the years seemed to worry as much about the impact their journeys take on those left behind. We have a feeling that, one way or another, Ryan won’t be in the TARDIS next season.
