Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’: Episode Four Review: Time Jump, Curses, & Proposals

Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ spoilers finds that today is the day we’ve been waiting for! The release of Netflix’s The Witcher is here. It has already been nothing short of glorious. In episode four we encounter assassins, meet the Dryads and face destiny in the face. This was another fantastic episode for the series. They keep knocking it out of the park! Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia is nothing short of a dream come true. The story has been compelling and mixes in action perfectly.

This week’s monster that we don’t even get to see was a Selkiemore. We meet Geralt covered in its guts in the beginning still being hyped up by his bard “friend”. Unfortunately, I think a lot of us would have enjoyed seeing Geralt kill the monster, but we get plenty of excitement in this episode!

    Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’: Time Jump

Episode four of The Witcher brings us an exciting twist in the story. We’ve been watching these three stories develope, Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer. However, we find out that these are separate timelines, at least for the moment. Geralt’s adventures have been taking place in the past before Ciri is even born! Yennefer talks about how she’s been working as a mage for decades, meaning her transformation has been long ago! Meanwhile, Ciri wandering in the woods is indeed the present time, as she searches for Geralt of Rivia.

If you look around online or even scroll through Facebook, you may have noticed the articles about this. They try to convolute the storyline, implying it’s confusing and doesn’t make sense. However, I believe if you’re a fan, or have been just enjoying the series, you probably have a pretty good grasp of what’s going on.

Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’: A Destiny Fulfilled, & One Begun

In Geralt’s storyline, he has gone to Cintra, accompanying his “not friend” bard. We discover the Queen is alive, but here’s the time “jump”. We’ve been following Geralt’s story before Ciri’s. This is long before Princess Ciri is even born, and we meet her mother and presumably her father! This is the only reason Geralt’s destiny becomes a thing!

At a banquet held by the Queen, in which the bard drags Geralt there is an interruption. A knight who had been cursed makes his way in and proclaims that he shall marry the princess. This is, of course, met with aggression as the Queen wants this “monster” killed. Thankfully, Geralt intervenes, because this is just a man who has been cursed. He is no monster. Even more for the Queen, her daughter and he are in love.

This agitates her further and she even attempts to kill the cursed knight. Her daughter then intervenes with a magical spell. Implying her grandmother’s gifts have been passed to her. Much to the Queen’s chagrin, and a fulfillment of destiny she agrees that they are to be married, and even agrees to her own marriage the same evening.

It is Geralt’s own sarcastic nature that gets him in “trouble” with destiny. The knight expresses his admiration for Geralt saving his life, and that he must repay him. Geralt says it’s fine, but the knight presses further. With complete ignorance (which is why we love him) he claims the same law that the knight did to the dead king. It will be a destiny that the unborn child and Geralt will have some sort of bond. Geralt doesn’t believe any of it until the Princess vomits immediately. Geralt, of course, can only say one thing. F**k.

    Meanwhile, for Ciri & Yennefer

We met the Dryads. Well, Ciri did. While wandering through the woods she is met by Dryads and must drink the water to prove she has no ill-intention towards them. While she drinks from the tree source she once again has more visions. We can’t see much of what’s happening in these visions, but it has to allude to her destiny somehow. She is literally the girl in the woods now, and her Geralt is her destiny. He has to find her soon, and in the woods, because Renfri tells him about the girl in the woods.

Yennefer continues her fancy mage job, but while in a horse-drawn carriage is attacked by an assassin out to kill the Queen she rides with. Even worse is the Queen carries a newborn girl. It is heartwrenching watching them escape the assassin and its deadly spiderling creature. They escape through multiple portals until it becomes too late. The Queen is killed by the man, but Yennefer of Vengerberg saves the child from him at the lost moment. Or so we thought. Unfortunately, her portal led her to an ocean, and as they ride the waves to the beach we see the young child dead from an apparent drowning.

Yennefer attempts to revive the young child but no luck. Instead, she sits and talks to her as if she got out lucky. Being a woman you’re only looked at as a vessel to bear boys for the royalty, and even though they say they respect you, they don’t. Yennefer is obviously projecting as she buries the young child. It is hard to watch, and they show the blue face of the child several times. It’s tough to watch.
