CBC & Netflix’s Anne with an E has been an undeniable hit. Fans of the show have been raving about it since it launched. With the successful renewal and release of season two, it seemed destined for greatness. While it is still great, it was announced that the show would be cancelled. Many viewers couldn’t believe the news, a show so beloved and great being cancelled.
Season two ended November 24, after which it was announced that the series had been cancelled. We’ve been waiting for any signs of life, and thankfully Netflix released the trailer for season three. At what cost though? Can they possibly bring everything to an end or is there hope for a fourth season after all?
‘Anne with an E’ – Third Season Trailer
According to IMDB, Anne with an E can be summarized as “The adventures of a young orphan girl living in the late 19th century. Follow Anne as she learns to navigate her new life on Prince Edward Island, in this new take on L.M. Montgomery’s classic novels.” Anne is beautifully portrayed by the young and talented Amybeth McNulty. The show has tugged on heartstrings and hasn’t left a dry eye on the couch since its launch. Why would CBC, after partnering with Netflix and of all its new content and existing series choose to cancel this gem? While it’s hard to wrap our heads around, we can be grateful for season three. While most agree that this will be the last season, no thanks to Netflix. There have been some viewers who hold out hope for a fourth season.
‘Anne with an E’ – Some Hold Out Hope For Fourth Season
Why would anyone be inclined to believe that there was hope for a fourth season? According to Anne with an E’s Wikipedia page, “CBC president, Catherine Tait stated in October 2019 that CBC would no longer involve itself in co-production with Netflix, as they constitute deals “that hurt the long-term viability of our domestic industry.” A day after the third season concluded its Canadian run, and despite statements from CBC previously expressing “no doubt that Canadians will continue to fall in love with this beautiful and heartwarming series for seasons to come,” Netflix and CBC announced the show’s cancellation, marketing the season three release on Netflix as the show’s “final season.”
After the producers even took to social media to tell everyone that the show would be cancelled, fans have continued to engage to save the show under the hashtag #renewannewithane. With all this confirmation from the creators, why would anyone hold out hope? Well, according to commenters on the Youtube video, Netflix didn’t label the third season as “the final season”. Typically, when a show does get into its last season it’s given that label. This has led some to believe that maybe Netflix has optioned or attained the rights to the show and will put out the fourth season exclusively on Netflix. Clearly, this is a large stretch. However, anything is possible. You can catch the third season of Anne with an E on Netflix, January 3.
