Zombies and Nazis have become the number one target of films, television, and video games. They’re easy villains simply for their lack of empathy and desire for torture and pain unto others. Hunters plays into the latter and shows us 1970’s New York, and a group of people “hunting” Nazis who escaped the war and are living in New York. We can all agree, Nazis are bad. While the zombie genre has been losing steam over the last few years, we have to wonder, will the Nazi theme follow suit? This is the question that has plagued the trailer for Amazon Prime Video’s Hunters on YouTube.
Hunters stars Al Pacino as Meyer Offerman, the head of this “task force”. In the trailer you see him standing behind a desk with corkboards of photographs stringed together behind him explaining to the group of “hunters” what the Nazis have taken from them and why they are right for killing them. It hooks you in and Pacino seems to be giving a decent performance, even with an accent. The group is formed of a diverse crowd, young to old, white to black and pretty much covers everything in between, telling them they have all been taken advantage of at one point in their lives because of these Nazis. Okay, sure. I’m in, but where do people draw the line between reality and fiction?
Summarized on IMDB, “Inspired by true events, HUNTERS follows a diverse band of Nazi Hunters in 1977 New York City who discovers that hundreds of escaped Nazis are living in America. And so, they do what any bad-ass vigilante squad would do: they set out on a bloody quest for revenge and justice. But they soon discover a far-reaching conspiracy and must race against time to thwart the Nazis’ new genocidal plans.”
It seems pretty straight forward. Hear about the Nazis in your city, go kill them. Has this theme been played out though or are audiences still ready to watch another television show or a film about this? As of today, Hunters trailer on YouTube has 6.4k likes, to 3k dislikes and a levy of negative comments about the show, but is this just politics getting in the way of entertainment, or is there something else at play here? If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out below.
The first season of Hunters will consist of 10 episodes and released sometime next year, date still undetermined. I’ll let you decide for yourself whether you want to check this series out or not. I know it sounds interesting, and it’s cool to see an old star like Al Pacino on the small-screen but is the backlash real or will the show prevail? I suppose we’ll find out next year.
