This might seem like it’s taking a step forward, but then again, it’s also like taking a step back in time, too. There are new reports that say Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has left the capital city of Kiev for the very first time since the war began in order to assess the damage that has been done to the city of Kharkiv. Here’s what you need to know.

According to reports, the president was photographed in a bulletproof vest observing the ruins in Ukraine’s second largest city, where Russia has resumed shelling. He walked around the city to look at the damage caused by Russia’s invasion, before presenting troops with medals. “I want to thank each of you for your service. You risk your lives for us all and for our country,” Mr Zelenskyy told the soldiers, according to the president’s office website.

Ukraine Update: President Volodymyr Zelensky VIsits Kharkiv For The First Time Since Russia’s Invasion

Kharkiv saw unrelenting bombardment and missile attacks during the first weeks of the war and was left a total shell, with more than 2,000 apartment buildings flattened so far, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov. But the northeastern city fought back, pushing back Russian troops to the point where some citizens felt able to return to the place they once called home.

“I feel boundless pride in our defenders. Every day, risking their lives, they fight for Ukraine’s freedom,” Mr Zelenskyy wrote on the Telegram messaging app after his visit.

Zelensky said that “one-third of the Kharkiv region is still under occupation. We will definitely unoccupy the whole territory.”
Turning to the fighting in Donbas, Zelensky said that 90% of the housing in Severodonetsk had been damaged. “Capturing Severodonetsk is a fundamental task for the occupying contingent. And they don’t care how many lives will have to pay for this attempt to raise the Russian flag.”
