Should Prince Harry and Prince Andrew retain the royal roles that will see them step in for King Charles III should he be unable to carry out his duties? That’s what some politicians in the UK are currently debating. Here’s what you need to know.

The two royals, who’ve both exited the firm – Prince Harry to begin his independent life in California, and Prince Andrew amid his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and sex abuse case, which he settled earlier this year – are among those who will step in for Charles per the Counselors of State rule. Counselors of state are meant to represent Charles should he ever be unable to complete official duties, like signing acts of parliament into law.

There are calls for the list of five – Princess Beatrice, Prince William, Camilla, Queen consort, Prince Harry and Prince Andrew – to be expanded, as the latter pair are no longer working royals. Now that Harry lives in the US, it could prove difficult for him to stand in for his father.

The question was raised in the upper house of the British Parliament earlier this week, People reports, when a member of the House of Lords, Viscount Stansgate, asked if the government was “happy to continue with a situation where the counsels of state and regency powers may be exercised” by Princes Harry and Andrew.

They said the king would be asked whether a “sensible amendment can be made,” with the Lord Privy Seal, Lord True, adding the government will “always consider what arrangements are needed to ensure reliance in our constitutional arrangements” and hinting that now would be the time to look into making the change, though the consideration had been under way for months, the publication reports.

Sources say it is Princess Anne, and Prince Edward Charles may tap to take on more official roles within the firm, but only time will tell considering the king’s want for a slimmed-down monarchy.
