The New York Times has faced huge backlash, with a large proportion of people claiming that it had been too sympathetic towards Kyle Rittenhouse.

Readers Slam The New York Times For Being Too Sympathetic To Kyle Rittenhouse Despite Him Potentially Facing Jail Time

Kyle, for his part, is currently on trial after shooting two people dead and injuring another during a protest that had occurred in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake. This protest was in response to what people claim to be increasing police brutality.

Although Kyle did not deny doing those things, his defence was predicated on the fact that he was acting on the grounds of self-defence. Therefore, he believed that he should be declared innocent, as others would have acted in the same way as him, given the situation.

In a post on Twitter, The New York Times wrote the following: “Kyle Rittenhouse, who has idolized law enforcement since he was young, arrived in Kenosha…with at least one mission: to play the role of police officer and medic.

“The night would end with him fatally shooting two men and wounding another.” The tweet mentioned above was called out for huge criticism for the following reasons.

First of all, many felt that the storyline was doing a disservice to the family of the deceased. After all, they are hell-bent on ensuring that somebody is held accountable.

Secondly, given the fact that the post focused on Kyle’s ambitions, many could not understand why this was given precedence because his actions led to the end of the deceased’s aspirations.

One person wrote: “Osama Bin Laden, who dreamed of becoming a pilot, never made his dream come true. Or did he?” – NY Times Normalization Section.”

While another stated: “Kyle Rittenhouse breaks down his most iconic racist murders with the New York Times.” Regardless of whether you agree with the tweet by the New York Times, it is important to bear in mind that a trial is still ongoing.

With that in mind, the newspaper should have avoided using language that could be viewed in a biased manner to avoid offending people. It is safe to say that this story is not going to die down anytime soon.
