However, Eric felt compelled to reinforce and extend what he sees as his legacy in recent months. That happened because of the terminal diagnosis he received.
Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) agreed to his adoptive father’s offer. They engaged in a fashion challenge that Ridge won. While Eric forbids those in the know from telling Ridge the truth, Kaye’s character is aware of reality. He claimed Eric won their fashion battle, which allowed him to retake the reigns at FC.

Everyone knows Eric cannot handle the day-to-day rigors of running a major fashion company. The man has trouble breathing from one moment to the next.
He refused to be hospitalized after collapsing at the Forrester mansion. Donna Logan (Jennifer Gareis) had to lead him out of the office earlier that day.
While Eric is expected to survive the latest crisis, his time has been limited. His doctor projected approximately six months of life mid-fall, meaning he has until the spring.

Suddenly, Ridge and Steffy are in charge again. That is not the issue, as they were only out of power for weeks and know what to do. Thankfully, Eric did not have enough time, or his misguided decisions could have been disastrous. So, this intermediary period of family tension temporarily destabilized FC on B&B.
