Netflix ‘The Crown’ Season 4: British Culture Minister Says The Series Should Be Labeled As Fiction

When it comes to the royal family, no one really knows what’s real and what’s fictional anymore, both on and off screen.

That’s probably the reason why Britain’s Cultural Minister says that The Crown Season 4 should be labeled as “fiction” seeing how many people believe that what they see on the series actually did happen almost 40 years ago. Here’s what you need to know.

Netflix ‘The Crown’ Season 4: British Culture Minister Says The Series Should Be Labeled As Fiction

Britain’s Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden went on the record to say that The Crown should come with a disclaimer amid all of the criticism that the Netflix series has so far gotten about the historical liberties that have been taken about the royal drama. Speaking to the Mail on Sunday,

Dowden says that it’s up to Netflix to provide accurate information and if not, at least provide a disclaimer for fans.

“It’s a beautifully produced work of fiction,” he explained to the outlet. “So as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that. Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.”

What’s more, former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter, who was with Charles and Diana on their Australia tour in 1983, also says that many parts of The Crown is pure fiction.

He says that Prince Charles and Princess Diana couldn’t keep their hands off of each other when they were newlyweds and that Charles was still affectionate with his wife two years into their marriage. He also suggested that The Crown should come with a warning and that the series’ portrayal of the Queen as a “cold” mother was also off the mark.

While The Crown portrays Prince Charles as emotionally cold towards his wife, Arbiter says that was not the case in real life.

He said, “’I remember going on tour just after they got married in 1981 and she was the first Princess of Wales in about 80 years, so it was a big deal. They couldn’t keep their hands off each other. Charles used to pat her bum regularly. There were times when he would even squeeze it, even in Australia. There was a relationship from the beginning. There was genuine love and happiness there.”

He also says that he takes issue with The Crown’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth as someone who is cold and without feeling.

He said, “Olivia Coleman as The Queen is not the Queen I know. She comes across as po-faced and cold …. The Queen does have motherly instincts. She was as concerned as any mother when Prince Andrew was going off to the Falklands.”
