Maurice Benard’s State of Mind has been really hitting it out of the park lately. The recent guests have had some interesting backgrounds, not to mention the cool GH flashback talk. This time, he featured Carolyn Hennessey, who plays Diane Miller on the show. Let’s take a look at some of the chat’s highlights.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind starts at the beginning
First off, Maurice Benard’s State of Mind reveals there are a lot of interesting stories out there. Hennessey is no exception. Her father worked on the set for Annie and they named one of the streets for him after he passed. Actually, she grew up on sets, including getting to spend time on the Young Frankenstein set, as well as Logan’s Run. She said she and her brother actually made the little cars that were going through a tube.
She also shared that her father taught her more about the business than anyone, especially when it comes to respecting others and being humble in the business. This is something she works to pass on to other young actors.
However, there was also a bit of darkness in her world, as her father was an alcoholic, which she took on as well. She spoke in-depth about the situation, proudly sharing she is 21 years sober now.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind and relationship drama
One thing that came up during her visit to Maurice Benard’s State of Mind is her divorce. They seem to be in a good place and it sounds like the situation was far more simple and amicable than a lot of other cases. However, there is always the “what now?” factor after the end of a relationship.
Apparently, Hennessey is friends with Erin Murphy of Bewitched, who made a dating account profile on Carolyn’s phone. She ultimately decided to go out with a guy from the app, but it didn’t take her long to decide it was better to just be single. She explained her tolerance for baggage is too small to handle another’s.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on acting
Another big part of the conversation was learning, as an actress, to be okay with the word “no”. She says it takes time to develop that, but it did play a part in her drinking. She went on to explain everyone’s bottom is different, everyone’s process of recovery is different as well.
The actress gave some insight into her drive as an actor, talking about hearing laughter is like oxygen. She talked about the elation of being on stage but pointed out the challenging parts of the business as well.
That being, of course, having to get headshots, pound the pavement to get that next role, etc. So, drinking would help her prolong the elation of the good parts of the business. They spoke about how a natural high is far better, and it allows you to really take in what’s around you.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on unusual talents
A real fun part of the conversation was where they talked about her doing trapeze work. She ended up telling Maurice she’ll have him over to do some himself, and she even offered him money to do it. She actually has a hanging trapeze in her driveway.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind talks GH and passion
Carolyn had a bit of a bone to pick, however. She wondered where Diane Miller was when Sonny Corinthos (Benard) came home and Maurice was surprised to realize they hadn’t had a scene together yet.
During that part of the chat, they also talked about the importance of enjoying what you do. And we love how they reinforced something we’ve talked about before—if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, it translates to the audience. So that joy and fun in it is important to the work.
Ultimately, she said once it’s not fun anymore, she knows it’s time to hang it up. Benard pointed out that this is the place where he is right now. It’s becoming less fulfilling over time. He’s come to realize that the grass isn’t greener on the other side of the soap world. So, it sounds a lot like he’s still hanging in there as far as GH and the job he’s got there. But he’s becoming less and less driven to do things outside of that.
