‘Welcome to Plathville’: What’s Up With Ethan And Olivia? – Are They On The Same Paths In Life?

‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers tells that’s what the entire fandom is asking at this point because both Ethan and Olivia Plath seem to be on wildly different life trajectories to one another. Olivia started out her life on the same path, because she was raised in the same type of background as Ethan, but she was always eager to break free and always longed for something better and less restrictive than what the confines of her upbringing provided.

I’m not sure of Olivia’s entire life history, but it looks like she was kind of just biding her time until the moment that she could run wild.

‘Welcome to Plathville’: Ethan Wasn’t

Until Olivia came into his life, I don’t think Ethan really questioned a lot of what his upbringing consisted of. Ethan, while he certainly did long for maybe a less restrictive upbringing, it seemed that he didn’t think all of it was bad and aside from drinking coke and indulging in the occasional beer and maybe side-eyeing what the preacher said (ahem, what Lydia told him last week) sometimes, I think he was largely okay with how he was brought up.

Then again, there’s a marked difference between growing up as a male in an uber-conservative background and growing up as a female.

The only thing that men are expected to do, out of these uber-conservative, Quiverfull lifestyles, is to provide a good, stable career (this does not imply heavy education, it just implies a stable income) and the ability to provide for a wife and children. Outside of that, they really don’t place any sort of expectations on a man.

However, on women, these cults expect a woman to meek, submissive, modest, and to never even think about having romantic intentions outside the wedding bed. After they’re married they are expected to be ‘joyfully available’ at all times to their husbands, whether or not they have 18 hungry mouths to feed or if they’re going through a bout of post-partem depression or what.

We can certainly applaud Ethan and Olivia for being forthcoming about their miscarriage and telling the media that they both were ‘not ready’ for children because in these circles specifically, there is a stigma around these sorts of things.

Sometimes one hears whispers of ‘divine punishment’ even when that is not the case. At this point, it may not be a case of incompatibility, since, as of the time of this writing they have confirmed via social media and in interviews that they are still married – at the time of this airing, it may have been some unresolved grief from that miscarriage that is causing the tension.

After all, just because one is not ready for a child emotionally, physically, or financially, doesn’t mean they aren’t willing. Guess we’ll see about that theory as this season unfolds. Stay tuned!!!
