‘Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills’: Why Sisters Kyle Richards and Kathy Hilton Didn’t Speak for 10 years

‘Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills’ spoilers find that breakout star, Kathy Hilton has become an instant fan favorite now she has joined the long running reality series as a ‘friend’ of the show. Of course, she is not just a ‘friend’, but the sister of O.G. Housewife, Kyle Richards.

The pair are now a joy to watch together–who will forget Kathy crawling into bed with Kyle while they were on vacation, only to read a newspaper and drink Red Bulls in the middle of the night? However, if you’d asked either woman two years ago about the possibility they would be talking, let alone starring on a reality show together, both would look at you like you are Sutton Stracke…no, Brandi Glanville.

‘Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills’: Why Sisters Kyle Richards and Kathy Hilton Didn’t Speak for 10 years

In a recent episode, the (now repaired) rift between the sisters was finally addressed with Kyle explaining that the problems began a decade ago when Kyle and her husband Mauricio Umansky started a real estate firm, The Agency.

Sound innocuous? Well, not quite.

Prior to founding The Agency, Kyle’s husband, Mauricio  had been working for Rick Hilton, Kathy’s husband. When Rick failed to make Mauricio a partner in his real estate firm, Mauricio and Kyle struck out on their own and went in direct competition with the Hiltons.

The Agency has done well. Like selling the Playboy Mansion for $100,000,000 dollars well. You only have to see Kyle’s clothing and home to know the couple have had great success and created quite the wealth from their company- and presumably without the need to rip off orphans and widows, burns victims or cancer survivors.

However, while the professional life of Kyle was blooming, her family life was suffering. Kathy even uninvited Kyle from her daughter, Nicky Hilton’s, wedding. Luckily Kyle was re-invited and did attend.

The biggest wedge to separate the sisters- including third sister, Kim Richards who had once starred on RHOBH with Kyle, occurred in 2018. Three years ago, Kyle produced a series for Lifetime called “American Woman” that was based on the unconventional childhoods of the Richards sisters.

Kathy was dead against the project, believing it spoke ill of herself, her sisters but mostly her late mother, Kathleen Richards. Kathy (with Kim’s support) lawyered up to stop Kyle’s show from going ahead. Production got around the lawsuit by fictionalizing the story rather than making it a biopic.

Kyle believes the series to be a “love letter to mom.”

“I liked the idea of something in the ’70s, seeing a single mom and how they didn’t know how to navigate without their husband,” Kyle claimed of the newly fictionalized project.

Meanwhile, Kathy and Kim did not see it that way. Kathy claims there was already enough outside, negative opinion about the Richards family and American Woman only created more fodder for the haters, even if the character Clueless alum, Alicia Silverstone played in the series was only “inspired” by Kathleen.

Kathy also didn’t buy that Kyle felt completely absolved of any wrong doing when it came to producing the series, otherwise she would have consulted her sisters rather than blindsiding them with a show ‘about their lives’. In turn, Kyle claims she did speak to Kim, but the fact that she and Kathy weren’t on speaking terms stopped Kyle from bringing up the project to her big sister.

Kyle admitted in a side, away from Kathy, that she was tentative to ever bring up the America Woman series as she fears it would set back the progress the two have made to repair their family rift.  “I’m terrified that it’s going to spark another issue,” she confessed.

It seems however, despite American Woman being made, the sisters are getting back on track with their relationship.

Kathy once explained that watching her daughters  Nicky and Paris Hilton made her sad to know she no longer had a relationship with her own sister and it was husband Rick who encouraged Kathy to invite Kyle and Mauricio over for dinner. Kyle and Mauricio accepted and the road to reconciliation was paved.

Fast forward to Kathy agreeing to appear on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (much to daughter Nicky’s chagrin) just so she could reconnect with her sister .

“I never would have thought I’d say yes to this,” Kathy told People Magazine. “But Kyle convinced me to do it. And I was flattered. I thought it would be an opportunity for us to spend time together. I really missed her.”

Kathy and Kyle seem to be well on the way to repairing all old wounds. In fact, the sisters are seemingly so close on screen now, it’s hard to believe they were on the outs for so long. Kathy said how she regrets losing so much time with Kyle over their decade long rift and believes if their mother was still alive, she never would have stood for her daughters feuding. Mom, Kathleen was always the moderator, according to Kathy.

She added, “Family is family. It takes time, but it feels so good to be where we are now. And I’ve really appreciated this time.”

Speaking on behalf of RHOBH fans, we appreciate you too, Kathy– you quirky goddess! This season has been a heavy one with Erika Jaye and her estranged husband, Tom Girardi’s legal woes taking front and center when it comes to storylines. Kathy’s levity and often eccentric behavior is a welcome break from Erika’s tears, anger and coldness.

When asked if Kathy will become a fulltime cast member, she has said she doubts she could fit it into her busy schedule, but also added with a wink “never say never.”

Keep your fingers crossed, all.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season 11 airs Wednesday nights on Bravo at 8/7c.
