‘The Bachelorette’: Trista Sutter on the Family Dealing with Husband, Ryan’s Lyme Disease Diagnosis

The Bachelorette’ O.G., Trista Sutter married the man she gave her final rose, and her heart to at the end of season one of ‘The Bachelorette’. For better or for worse, Ryan Sutter and Trista have been married now for almost 18 years. And now the worst is upon the strong as ever couple.

Ryan has been struggling with a mystery illness for the better part of a year now. He was finally diagnosed as having contracted Lyme Disease, exacerbated by mold toxins, along with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and long-haul Covid-19.

With a diagnosis often being the first step to recovery, for this former fireman and father of two, there is no clear path to a treatment.

“I try to look at the positive, and it’s definitely a good thing to have answers,” said Trista, 48. “So I’m very thankful that we have answers, because not knowing is so, so, so difficult.”

However, these answers have only prompted more and more questions, Trista explained, sharing that Ryan has “his up days and down days.”

The 46 year old’s diagnosis will be a lifetime one but what makes it difficult to swallow is that there are no medications available to him or no surgeries to help fight the chronic disease.

The family is grateful, however, that Ryan’s case is not as severe as what some other people have to learn to cope with. Trista says Ryan is “lucky” as he hasn’t lost the ability to walk, talk or use his arms which this debilitating disease can do.

“I feel lucky in the fact that it’s in certain parts of his body,” Trista said. “We know that it’s probably in his ankle, he has a bad knee, it’s probably residing in those. But he has brain fog occasionally and the fatigue is unbearable sometimes for him. But I do feel lucky that it’s not as severe as some people that we’re hearing.”

After sharing Ryan’s diagnosis and story, the Sutters have received an outpouring of messages of love and hope and from others dealing with similar health problems. Trista said they hope to use the public attention to raise awareness of Lyme disease and push for more research and a cure or management path.

“It’s been hard, to see him struggle, because he is such a strong human in general. It’s just hard to see the person you love most in the world feeling like crap,” Trista finished, teary eyed.
