BBC Doctor Who Spoilers: Jodie Whittaker & Big Chris Chibnall Leaving + HUGE Changes ahead!

Doctor Who spoilers reveal a huge change is coming to the TARDIS soon. And, in our opinion, it’s overdue. Let’s take a look at where things stand and the big announcement viewers were expecting.

BBC America Doctor Who Spoilers: Downfall

We’ll be honest. We’ve loved Doctor Who since we first caught it near the end of Matt Smith’s run as the 11th Doctor. The show was fun, suspenseful, and complex.

As we went back through the previous seasons of the revival, we found them to be a lot of fun as well. And the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) was our favorite. But that love faded with the arrival of the 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.

The writing became message-heavy and obvious. There was little suspense, and it led to one of the worst episodes in the entire New Who run. An episode we covered here at the time. Then, the writers pulled a shocking, and upsetting move at the end of the last season.

They basically threw out the entire history of Who as fans knew it for over 50 years by revealing the 1st Doctor, William Hartnell, wasn’t actually the first incarnation. Nor was he even from the famous planet the Doctor called home. So it wasn’t surprising to see the talk begin.

BBC America Doctor Who Spoilers: Rumors

Not long after the season (and the holiday special) ended, the talk started. Rumors swirled that Jodie Whittaker was out and the character would regenerate. Quite a lot of fans supported this, and we think there’s a bit of unfairness there.

There seemed to be a thought that if Whittaker left the famous role, the show would get better. We disagreed. It’s not the star who writes the stories or plans the show out. It’s the show runner and writers, and that begins with Chris Chibnall.

Plus, the BBC didn’t seem to take the criticisms (and lagging ratings/online engagement) seriously. In fact, they seemed to double down on supporting what the show had become. Well, now the talk is official, and we’re thinking it might be time to tune in again.

BBC America Doctor Who Spoilers: Goodbyes

In official statements, both Chibnall and Whittaker announced they were leaving the series. They presented it as a planned decision that the pair would be there together for three seasons, then bow out. Evidence would suggest this to be the case.

After all, with the exception of Eccleston, each modern doctor has served for three full seasons. Although, David Tennant, the 10th Doctor, also did a series of specials in between his last season and the beginning of the Steven Moffat/Matt Smith era. So, we’re not surprised to see it’s official.

Said Chibnall, “For me, leading this exceptional team has been unrivalled creative fun, and one of the great joys of my career. I’m so proud of the people we’ve worked with and the stories we’ve told. To finish our time on the show with an additional Special, after the pandemic changed and challenged our production plans, is a lovely bonus.”

Whittaker added, “So here we are, weeks away from wrapping on the best job I have ever had. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to express what this role has given me. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever. I know change can be scary and none of us know what’s out there. That’s why we keep looking. Travel Hopefully. The Universe will surprise you. Constantly.”

We wish both the best in their next projects, and we’re curious to see if this will bring a reversal of the big changes that upset so many fans. We’ll see. For now, fans can check out the new season in the fall.

It’s reported to be six episodes, and there will be a trilogy of specials to end the 13th Doctor’s story, with the third being added recently. It will also coincide with a big anniversary for the BBC, so we assume they’ll be putting a lot into the production. The specials are expected to air in 2022.
