‘Days of Our Lives’ Star Billy Flynn (Chad DiMera) Opens Up About His Real Life Addiction Struggle With Drugs & Alcohol

‘Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) spoilers find that star Billy Flynn has gotten real when speaking to General Hospital’s Maurice Bernard (Sonny Corinthos) on his ‘State of Mind’ YouTube talk show. Opening up about his struggles with drugs and alcohol, Flynn was happy to report he has been in recovery for almost three years now.

Before making a turn for the better, Flynn admitted he used to do or take anything if it meant escaping himself after falling into a cycle of reveling in the attention of bad behavior and returning to good favor. “Once I would have something,” he explained the unexplainable, “it was no longer appealing to me.”

‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Billy Flynn (Chad DiMera) Gets Real About His Dark Addiction Struggles; “I’m a Work In Progress”.

The 36 year old recalled how he forced himself to make a change, with the alternative being death.

“I mean, there were times when I would drink and use, to a place where thought I was going to die quite literally in the moment,” the soap star admitted, “and I would keep going. I took as much as I could, and when I woke up, I was shocked.”

At his lowest, Flynn says he was willing to give up everything good in his life- “my wife and my job and everything else that I loved” if it meant not feeling as bad as he did. “There were times I didn’t want to live,” he said.

His troubles leached over to his work on Days of Our Lives. Flynn recalled a scene where he had to cry during his early days of taking over the role of Chad DiMera. He explained how the concept of crying in front of so many others “seemed insane,” so he “decided to fake it.”

He was so unconvincing in the scene that the director called cut— almost unheard of in the modern-day soap world. Afterward, when he still couldn’t pull off the scene to his liking he thought for sure he would be fired from the soap.

Luckily Flynn kept his job, and even more crucial, found a reason and a way to get clean. A work-in-progress, Flynn works on being his best self every day.
