Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Shamed For Not Helping Her Grandmother In Storm-Ravaged Puerto Rico

Is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez the consummate victim? That’s what a lot of fans can’t help but wonder as she is once again blaming the government – and the Donald Trump administration – for the squalid conditions that her grandmother in Puerto Rico lives in.

In a series of Tweets, AOC took aim at the former president and local politicians over the distribution of aid following the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and blamed them for the way that her grandmother lives in Puerto Rico.

But seeing how she has a six figure salary herself, a lot of critics can’t help but wonder why AOC can’t spend the money needed to fix her grandmother’s roof and buy her new furniture. Here’s what you need to know.

“This is her home,” AOC wrote alongside two photos from her grandmother’s place on Twitter. “Hurricane María relief hasn’t arrived. Trump blocked relief $ for PR. People are being forced to flee ancestral homes, & developers are taking them.”

Of course, it didn’t take long at all for both fans and critics alike to weigh in on the matter. Many of them said, “Many families help each other especially in bad times. Sadly AOC talked highly of her grandmother during her first run for party. Now she has shown grandma was a prop who really didn’t mean that much. Especially when she has the means to help her out and never did for over a year!” along with, “Many families help each other especially in bad times. Another critic wrote, “For several years I sent money home to my parents. My dad was ill with cancer and their income was interrupted. My brothers and I contributed monthly so they could be comfortable and not stressed. They were able to stay in their home and take care of necessities without worry. I wonder if AOC can even conjure up the thought of stepping in to help out! It’s her grandmother but she expects the government to step in and help out! Outrageous!”

So far AOC has not responded to any of her critics, but when conservative commentator Matt Walsh suggested that it was more of her responsibility to help her grandmother and not the government, she hit back with, “You don’t even have a concept for the role that 1st-gen, first-born daughters play in their families. My abuela is okay. But instead of only caring for mine & letting others suffer, I’m calling attention to the systemic injustices you seem totally fine w/ in having a US colony.”
