‘The Bachelor’: Rachel Lindsay Hits Out At The Show’s Lack Of Diversity
Rachel, for her part, decided to take a break after receiving huge backlash in response to her comments towards Chris Harrison following the Rachael Kirkconnell scandal. Although Rachel has moved on since then, she has now hit out at the franchise for its lack of diversity.
During an interview with the Variety Show, Rachel confirmed how the producers manipulated the casting of men of colour. She said: “ I was getting upset at the selection of men of colour. I also learned as I was going through my season that several of the Black men…didn’t date Black women.” Nevertheless, the show has made some improvements as evidenced by their recent activity.
Matt James became the first male black lead, and despite producing some of the show’s lowest ratings from the outset, he did leave his mark on the show-albeit for the wrong reasons. Not only that, but the franchise has also cast Michelle Young as a black female lead in the future season of The Bachelorette.
And yet, Rachel was the OG of this movement which may explain her passion for inclusivity. She stated: “It’s [diversity] something I was worried about before I went on the show. I think I got a little bit more grace because I was the first [Black lead], and people were just excited that a person of colour was in this role.”
With the show always throwing up talking points, there is no doubt that Rachel will have many topics to discuss in the future. There are high hopes for Michelle, following her performance on Matt’s season, given she made it to the latter stages. And with an increasing push for more diversity, Rachel could find herself at the very forefront of that movement.
After all, she is all too aware of those issues. She revealed: “That’s my life. I live that.” Rachel’s opinions continue to hold weight, but whether she makes a return that is connected to the franchise is another matter.
