Netflix ‘Unorthodox’ Stars Win Independent Spirit Awards!

The stars of the Netflix series ‘Unorthodox’, Shira Haas and Amit Rahav have both won Independent Spirit Awards, specifically “Best female performance” and “Best male performance” for their portrayal of the Jewish Orthodox married couple “Esty” and “Yanky”.

‘Unorthodox’ follows the young married life of Esty, a girl who is part of an ultra conservative sect of Hasidic jews in New York City. The series follows Esty’s journey into marriage which is apparently a thing among orthodox jewish communities still.

‘Unorthodox’ stars win Independent Spirit awards

We get to see Esty’s struggle with married life and especially intimacy because the way their culture is young people really aren’t given a chance to be able to explore intimacy of any kind before being rushed off into matrimony and we see how detrimental that can be to someone’s mental and emotional health.

To anyone who’s seen the series, these two did a phenomenal job of portraying the awkwardness that would stem between two people who didn’t know each other before getting married.

From Esty’s terrifyingly raw bedroom scenes to Yanky’s completely awkward bumbling of basically everything, these two did a phenomenal job of portraying the human sides of both characters and making us feel for both of them, even if we did root for one side slightly more than the other. (Esty all the way!)

Haas wrote on her IG post, commemorating the occasion, “Thank you @filmindependent for honoring me with the best female performance in a scripted series award. Best news I’ve ever received at 6 am!” Whereas Rahav posted a video of him receiving his award saying, “Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I’m never sleeping again!” This year the Independent Spirit Awards took place online due to the pandemic but this is the awards show that is the next step towards the Oscars.

Haas was the first Israeli to ever be nominated for a Golden Globe but missed her chance at a win earlier this year. She also won an Ophir award, basically an Israeli Academy Award, for her work in “Noble Savage” in 2018. Recently, she’s been seen on Netflix, again in the role of an Orthodox Jewish character in Shtisel. We congratulate both Shira Haas and Amit Rahav on their wins. Stay tuned!!!
