Most recently, in an intervie with Entertainment Weekly, Demi Lovato shared on youtube their struggles with mental health and sobriety, which took a lot of guts considering how much stigma is still attached to mental health struggles and how much flack they got for being ‘california sober’, a term which some people just say ‘isn’t sober at all’. However now it seems that they have come out and spilled some entirely new tea – the fact that they’re non-binary.
Which means, instead of a gender-specific pronoun like he/she, they would like to be referred to as they/them from now on. For awhile now they’ve proclaimed to be “queer” and have said that they are too “queer” to commit to a man at the moment, even after being engaged to former fiance Max Ehrich in 2020.
Demi Lovato comes out as non-binary
Some people might say that this was just a ploy for attention after the whole ‘california sober’ thing fell flat with a lot of viewers, however, gender dysphoria is a real thing, and Lovato didn’t really make it a part of her documentary.
They definitely could have, but they didn’t, and they’ve been pretty low-key about it so far. If they really wanted attention then they could have made it yet another episode in the documentary, but they refrained.
Wise decision, Lovato says that they are by no means an expert and at this time they are still leaning and coming into themselves, they’re not a spokesperson. However, they are sharing their story now in order to help people with similar struggles with gender identity that haven’t been able to share their truth with their friends or family yet, “Please keep living your truths and know that I am sending so much love your way.” they said that they only came to their realization that they were non-binary after a lot of healing and introspective work.
Since there is still so much controversy centered around gender roles, the timing of this revelation takes guts, but ultimately it’s Lovato’s journey, not anyone else’s and as long as their preferred labels aren’t hurting others then its their decision to make.
Some people are probably disappointed that they’re shedding their squeaky clean disney girl image but it seems that Lovato waved goodbye to that awhile ago andis now fully embracing themselves as who they truly are. They have said that no matter the controvery involved, they love accepting themselves. Good for them. Stay tuned!!!
