Hilaria Baldwin’s 2020 is about to certainly close out as the worst year on record for her, and not just because of the global pandemic that has been the coronavirus. Alec Baldwin’s wife has just been outed for not only going by a fake name, but also by putting on a fake Spanish accent for the last ten years. Here’s what you need to know.
Hilaria Baldwin Slammed For Capitalizing On Fake Spanish Accent
Hilaria – whose real name is actually Hilary – went on the record to admit that she was born in Boston and not in Mallorca, as she previously claimed, and that she is indeed a white girl. This came after a video claimed that she spent years misrepresenting her heritage went viral on Twitter last week. The internet did what it does best and it pulled up a number of videos of Hilaria’s past television appearances to prove that her Spanish accent isn’t real. If that weren’t enough, several of her former classmates came forward to confirm that Hilaria was in fact raised in Weston, Massachusetts, and not in Spain.
After she was called out on Twitter, Hilaria took to her Instagram account to clarify a few things by saying, “Let’s be very clear that Europe has a lot of white people in there and my family is white. Ethnically, I am a mix of many, many, many things. Culturally, I grew up with two cultures so it’s really as simple as that.”
Hilaria also said, “I was born in Boston and grew up spending time with my family between Massachusetts and Spain. My parents and sibling live in Spain and I chose to live here, in the USA.”
Of course, it didn’t take very long for many critics to take to social media to weigh in on the matter. Some comments included, “She’s trying to say that WE misunderstood her and that journalists are to blame. Girl, stop. The gig is up. As a Latin person who works so hard to not have an accent and speak the best English possible because it’s my second language since I was three, I will not tolerate an American woman capitalizing on a fake accent and Hispanic stereotypes because you needed a personality and a way to stand out. I’ve gotten dirty looks if I forget an English word. My English has to be on point or I’m treated differently.”
Others wrote, “This Latin American cultural appropriation is a problem because she’s using it to make money and get attention. So she should definitely be called out for it,” along with, “She seems like she is always seeking some kind of validation or attention. She puts herself out there a lot. Her parents were professors? Maybe they were busy a lot and perhaps there was a time in her childhood where they just didn’t give her the attention a growing child needs.”
So far Hilaria has not made any additional comments about the backlash.
