Youtuber David Dobrik Steals Idea For Disposable App

Did anyone realize that David Dobrik was developing an app? No? Well, I didn’t either until a minute ago. Anyway, so apparently Dobrik has been working at developing this app for awhile, called Disposable, where you take a picture and instead of it instantly showing up, it works like a disposable camera and you have to wait 24 hours in order for the picture to “develop”.

Not only that but lately he’s been trying to branch out and make it into an entire platform akin to instagram. I guess I’m missing the appeal here because I kind of like instagram’s instantaneous thing they have going on and don’t like leaving 24 hours up to chance, but, to quote many a millenial, “Okay, Boomer.”

Youtube – David Dobrik steals an idea?

Apparently I’m the only one that feels that way because Dobrik’s app has gotten a lot of support, the vlog squad, Sofia Vergara, and several other celebrities to name a few have invested in this app. I still don’t get the appeal but okay, whatever.

Either way, the app is undergoing some rebranding, which includes a new name. A name that, at first glance, as actually suggested to him by a TikTokker named Kareem. Kareem came up with a new design for the app and then suggested, “Drop the posable, and call it Dispo. It’s cleaner.” to which David himself commented, “When you said Dispo, I literally screamed. We’ll be reaching out.”

Kareem’s followers were overjoyed because they thought that Kareem would be getting all of this recognition and eventually be working side-by-side with David on this app. However, it was not to be. Even though David and his team loved the work that Kareem had done with the redesign, they ultimately decided to “go in a different direction” which made Kareem’s and David’s followers livid.

Because at first glance, it looked like David just took the name and was going to proceed to profit from Kareem’s good idea without giving proper credit. However, it doesn’t look like that’s actually the case, thankfully.

When publicly questioned by the papparazzi, David did address the question. He may not be talking about it on social media but he did address it to one tabloid reporter in general by saying that he had not stolen Kareem’s idea, nor would he ever steal anyone’s idea, but that rather, Kareem stumbled upon the name Dispo in September, but they had already applied for the copyright of the name Dispo months beforehand, in June.

Sometimes lightning strikes twice and there’s nothing saying that people can’t happen upon the same good idea, however unfortunately for Kareem it looked like timing and lack of experience had something to do with him not being chosen to work on David’s team. David continued by saying that ultimately, Kareem did not have enough experience to help them accomplish what they wanted to with that app.

For now, we’ll give Dobrik the benefit of the doubt and be glad that, so far, he seems to be one of the real ones out there among a lot of youtubers who have proven themselves to ultimately be shady as all get out. He seems to be presenting a pretty clean front right now.

The thing is, Kareem was a good sport about it and didn’t seem hurt that David and his team decided to go in a different direction than what he presented, and that’s what matters is that no one was hurt in the process. Still, it does seem a little unfair that Kareem did all of that and won’t be getting a seat at the table. I guess we can chalk that up to the unfairness that is life. Stay tuned!!!
