UFC News: Dustin Poirier Not Expected To Be Included On UFC 254 Card

UFC 254 is growing ever closer, but there has been a snag in the discussions for one of the biggest rumoured bouts that was set to be included on the card. It has been revealed that it is now unlikely that Dustin Poirier will be included on the card as there has been a breakdown in negotiations with Tony Ferguson and his team.

It will come as a big blow for fight fans, who were expecting to see the two lightweight stars go head-to-head for the first time. The fight would have likely been an eliminator, with the winner expecting to challenge for the title. The title will be on the line in the main event of UFC 254, as Khabib Nurmagomedov goes head to head with Justin Gaethje.

UFC News: Breakdown In Negotiations

However, the dream fight between Poirier and Ferguson looks unlikely to happen now after there have been a break down in talks between the two fighters. The fight would have been one of the most exciting on the card, as both would have been looking to get themselves back into the title picture.

Poirier last competed for the title against Khabib, as he lost the interim title that he had won in April 2019 against Max Holloway. Khabib submitted Poirier in the third round of their bout in Abu Dhabi. That was Khabib’s return to the octagon following his victory over Irishman Conor McGregor.

UFC News: Ferguson Could Stay On Card

It is believed that the agreement had been reached on Ferguson’s side, and that he was already preparing for a fight on the card of UFC 254. However, that fight will no longer be against Poirier, which means that the UFC face a decision of whether to give Ferguson a new opponent or hold out on a potentially money-spinning fight with Poirier further down the line.

There had been an expectation that Ferguson would have been the one challenging Khabib, but he was shockingly beaten by Gaethje back in May. Before that fight, Ferguson had been the dominant form in the lightweight division, as he had won his previous 12 fights. During that run, he beat high-calibre fighters such as Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis and Rafael dos Anjos. There is expected to be an update from the UFC in due course surrounding whether Ferguson will be included on the UFC 254 card.
