British Royal Family News: One Of Prince Charles’s Favourite Sporting Events Of The Year Cancelled

British Royal Family News finds that the outbreak of the coronavirus has been damaging to sporting events all over the world, with many of the biggest competitions forced to suspend due to COVID-19. Last week, the Queen’s favourite horse racing meeting of the season announced that it would be going ahead behind closed doors. This week, it is the turn of Prince Charles’s favourite event to be cancelled.

Charles would have been disappointed as it was revealed yesterday that the Mey Highland Games will not be going ahead as planned this year. Charles has been the judge for many of the events throughout the years. However, organisers have revealed that the competition will now not go ahead as planned.

It was due to be a special staging of the games this year too, as the Highland Games was due to mark its 50th anniversary. The event was due to take place in August, which led many to believe whether organisers should have waited a few more weeks before making the announcement. However, they revealed that the safety of fans and athletes is the most important aspect to consider.

They added that the fact that the games attract such a wide international audience was another factor behind making the decision earlier. But, they vowed that the games would return in 2021 bigger and better than ever. Prince Charles will likely be counting down the days until next year’s competition in Scotland.

British Royal Family News: What Are The Mey Games?

The event has been staged every year since the Queen’s Mother’s 70th birthday and largely sees competitors challenge each other in feats of strength such as tugs-of-war, heavy weights and wrestling. The event is extremely popular in the local area, with hundreds of thousands of people flocking to the area to witness the games.

Charles writes in the event programme every year, and last year he referenced how much he loves the event, and revealed how proud he was to continue the tradition started by the Queen’s mother. The event will return in 2021, with next year’s competition likely to be one of the most popular for many years.
