British Royal News finds that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sure had a lot to think about during their six-week break from their royal engagements while in Canada. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex – who will now no longer be using their royal titles – have announced that they are quitting the royal family. The move comes after a rather turbulent year, in which Harry and Meghan were either slammed or dragged by their critics and the British press for many of the things they did and say. Here’s what you need to know.
“We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the couple shared on Instagram Wednesday. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.” The couple added that they will continue to work with Queen Elizabeth as well as Prince Charles and Prince Harry’s brother, Prince William.

“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honor our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” they continued. “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
For the most part it does appear as though their fans are supporting them with this move. Many royal fans have taken to their social media accounts to comment on Harry and Meghan’s statement. Many have left comments such as, “Good for Meghan and Harry opting out of the UK tabloids staggering racism and the lack of support from the royal family. They will be fine,” along with, “The royal family needs them a lot more than they need the royal family. Who wants to bet there are some heads rolling in Buckingham Palace right now?” Another fan wrote, “I imagine Princess Diana right now looking down and smiling. Anyone in the media who goes after Harry and Meghan for this, but had little or nothing to say about Princess Andrew can get out.”
