Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’: Episode Two Review: Yennefer, Princess Ciri & Elves!

Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ spoilers finds that today is the day we’ve been waiting for! The release of Netflix’s The Witcher is here. It has already been nothing short of glorious. Two episodes in and I can’t wait to click “next episode” on the screen. While this episode didn’t focus as much on Geralt as the first did, we were still treated to incredible stories. Stories of magic, betrayal and the shattered history between humans and elves.

Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’: Episode Two Review: Yennefer

Yennefer is the integral story of episode two. In the stories, her past is shown in brief flashbacks. Here, they seem to want to tell us her story in chronological order, and it’s a rough story. Born with a twisted spine and jaw abnormality she is labeled an outcast and even her own father doesn’t want her. It takes but four marks for him to sell her, his own daughter. In the stories, her mother argues a bit more with her father about it. She tells him she is his daughter. He rebuttals and claims it’s her womb that delivered such a monstrosity. The series pulls back on this a little bit. Her mother does call out her father, but briefly and in so many words.

Her father sells her for less than half the cost of a pig, and away she goes to Aretuza, the magical school of sorceresses. This is where we spend a lot of this episode, and it’s like Hogwarts meets American Horror Story. The young woman is given tests and trials to ascend. Yennefer is able to teleport to a mystical cavern attended by Istredd. Through this newfound relationship, he helps her to be able to control her powers and we find out that Yennefer is part elf! Unfortunately, we find that they have ulterior motives. Istredd is reporting back to the sorcerer from episode one, while Yennefer plays Istredd to gain an important flower, that only grows in a land soaked with elven blood. This is how she appeases her teacher, Tissaia and gets to ascend.

Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’: Episode Two Review: Ciri & Elven History

All of this ends up coming together as we follow Ciri on the run from Nilfgaard. In the woods, she is saved and forms a bond with a young boy. She then sees members of Cintran, who have successfully escaped. We think for the moment she is safe until Nilfgaard finds the encampment.  After learning more about the history of the bloody battle called, “The Cleansing”, where humans slaughtered elves who taught them magic, Nilgaard launches an attack on the camp. The young boy saves her from the attack and she discovers he is an elf! Elves are everywhere now! Ciri is back on the run to look for Geralt of Rivia.

Episode Two Review: Geralt & The Bard

Meanwhile, Geralt and a bard he met at a bar travel out to find a “devil” whose been stealing from the local townspeople. Alright! Sidequest! Isn’t it a shock though, as the “devil” turns out to be a Sylvan, a wise and mythical creature stealing for hidden elves! After being captured, Geralt is able to convince the elves to let them go. Man, he’s great with persuasion. Through this, we learn more about “The Cleansing” and where the Elves who survived have been hiding. Bitter and angry, their leader wishes to keep stealing and refuses to step back out in the sun with humans. Geralt tells them to simply, “Find somewhere else to go, grow stronger, show the humans your strength.” This gives them some ideas obviously, as they end up letting them go.

Episode Two Review: Summary

Essentially, you could chop up episode two as an Elvish history lesson and Sorcerer training 101. It wasn’t bad by any means. In fact, I loved it just as much as the first episode. Though it was a lot of obvious exposition and explaining. However, for new views not familiar with the stories or games, I’m fine with it. It allows people to watch and enjoy it as much as the fans do! Stick around, we’re going to start episode three of The Witcher and we’ll be back once again! Will Ciri find Geralt in the next episode? Will he see sexy and powerful Yennefer? Let’s go watch it now!
