Netflix’s ‘AJ and the Queen’ Starring RuPaul Releases January 10 (Trailer)

Another Netflix original series is on its way early next year! Releasing January 10, popular television star RuPaul (RuPaul’s Drag Race) is bringing their charismatic charm to Netflix in AJ and the Queen.

RuPaul – Internation Celebrity

Since 2009, RuPaul has produced and hosted the reality competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race, for which he received two Primetime Emmy Awards in 2016 and 2017. RuPaul is the most commercially successful drag queen of all time. In 2017, he was included in the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.

Appearing in several television shows and films, RuPaul is perhaps most well know for To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, which starred Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo as drag queens traveling across the country. Ironically, AJ and the Queen will follow a similar path.

‘AJ and the Queen’ – What We Know

According to a short summary on IMDB, AJ and the Queen follows “Ruby Red (RuPaul), a down-on-her-luck drag queen traveling across America, develops an unlikely sidekick named AJ (Izzy G).”

From what we see in the trailer, there seems to be great chemistry between RuPaul and young, new actor Izzy G. There are humor, drama and plenty of laughs spread throughout. After saving $100,000 from working as a drag queen performer, Ruby Red has big plans for opening up their own club, and it is “going to be major!” Ruby explains.

Unfortunately, the great plan doesn’t come without bumps in the road. Ruby Red’s lover leaves and runs off with the money, leaving Ruby with nothing, forcing them to take to the road and go back to performing across the country. Somewhere along the journey, we encounter young AJ, who we learn mothers not doing well and presumably we see her in jail.

In a funny scene in a diner, AJ explains that Ruby needs to take him to Texas, or “I’ll tell the waitress you touched me.” It pokes fun at the obvious appearance of an older man traveling alone with a 10-year-old boy. The trailer is filled with funny quips and jokes, while also showing a more dramatic story in the background about self-discovery and working yourself out of a slump.

‘AJ and the Queen’ Cast

Alongside RuPaul and newcomer Izzy G, AJ and the Queen co-stars Tia Carrere (Wayne’s World, Lilo and Stitch) and Katerina Tannenbaum (Better Call Saul).

Created by RuPaul and Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City), AJ and the Queen will be available for streaming on Netflix, January 10, 2020!
