We certainly believe Kelly Marie Tran when she says that quitting social media was perhaps the best decision that she’s ever made. The actress, who is best known for her role in Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, says that she quit posting on social media back in 2017 after relentless bullying from some of her critics and trolls and she hasn’t looked back since. Here’s what she has to say.

Kelly, who also stars in the new series Monsterland on Hulu, spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her decision to buck the trend and go rogue by quitting Twitter and Instagram. In today’s celebrity and entertainment world, it’s almost unheard of, as many actors like Kelly rely on social media to not only connect with their fans, but to also use it as a platform to get their message out.

Talking about why she decided to quit Instagram, Kelly told the site, “I think that it’s a different thing for everyone. People should do what they think is right for them. I also think that it was the best thing I ever did. People are still shocked by it sometimes. I just did what was best for me. Why is that so shocking? I feel great about it.”

When asked about how she feels about people getting called out online all the time (or canceled, as part of today’s ‘cancel culture’), Kelly said, “It’s hard and we do want to call people out when something’s problematic. At the same time, do they not get to exist in the world anymore? I don’t think there is one right answer. It’s a nuanced case by case thing.”
