La Reina Del Sur Recap 4/22/2019: Season 2 Episode 1 “El Regreso De La Reina” – La venganza
Cayetana Aljarafe (Luisa Gavasa) lost her son, Teo Aljarafe Segovia (Miguel de Miguel), nine years ago and she blames one person for it: Teresa Mendoza (Kate del Castillo), our protagonist. She’s been looking for Teresa for all this time, and has finally found her. She tells his daughters that Teresa is finally going to pay for her crimes. The one daughter (we haven’t been told their names in this one) thinks her father wasn’t exactly an angel, and we’re wondering who is in novela land?
Later on, we learn she was working with someone else (more on that later) who has decided to not go according to the script that she’s written. She’s upset with this and says she’ll be doing things her own way.

La Reina Del Sur: El pasado vive
Teresa, who is now living in Italy under the name Maria Dantes, is watching her daughter, Sofia (Isabella Sierra), paint outside when she starts falling asleep. She quickly snaps awake and into action when her daughter screams. Little Sofia is being taken by a hooded figure that leads to a kick-ass boat chase scene. Eventually, Teresa catches up and comes face to face with the kidnapper: the supposedly-dead Teo. She’s shocked, and he accuses her of ordering his death. They argue a bit, with Sofia begging her mom to tell her that’s not true.
Except not. It was all a nightmare that Teresa was having. Sofia, obviously hearing this and not a stranger to her mom’s nightmares, enters and asks how she was kidnapped this time. We love this kid already. We can’t with the child-like excitement in her voice when she asks this.
Later, Sofia is supposed to be in a flag team competition. Teresa is nervous about this, as she always in when it’s tourist season. Sofia thinks Teresa shouldn’t worry, because she knows how to pummel bad guys—her mom taught her that. Again, this kid.
We’re about to see how well Teresa has taught her daughter, because right after her kid finishes the competition, a man grabs her and takes off, locking her in the trunk of a car. Teresa spends the rest of the episode desperately chasing anyone and anything that might lead her to her daughter. In the process, she is reunited with old enemies and is forced to return to her homeland of Mexico. Only she won’t be Maria anymore, because Teresa está de regreso. You know when a character says that, it’s on.
La Reina Del Sur Recap: Her mother’s daughter
After being locked in the trunk, Sofia, like any kid, is freaking out big time. Her mother’s words go through her mind, telling her that only staying calm will get one out of bad situations. She then remembers some of the escape tactics that her mom taught her to get out of the trunk and crawls her way into the driver’s seat, where she takes off with the car. Like seriously, this kid owns the episode. Are we actually watching a Telemundo telenovela? There’s a child on one that is not being annoying, is competent, and not making things worse than they already were. #BizarroWorld
Unfortunately, she has the bad luck after abandoning the car to come across Francesco Belmondo (Raoul Bova), a friend of her mother’s who is actually in bed with Teresa’s enemies. He pretends to help her, but really just brings her back into captivity. She mouths off to him, telling him the message she’d just left from his phone is going to bust him and she’ll come after him. He says that call never actually went to her mom’s phone. It was a recording to trick her.
When she’s brought to a hiding place, Francesco warns César “Batman” Güemes and the others to not treat Sofia like a normal girl, as she was trained by her mom.
While being held, she sees a young guy who looks to be in his teens, and recognizes him as someone who nearly got her killed before after distracting her on the street and realizes that was a set-up to get her mother and her to trust Francesco.
Fun while it lasted…
In the past year, Teresa has started seeing a man named Pedro (Aitor Luna), who she’s been hiding her past from. He doesn’t understand her aversion to having pictures out, especially those of her daughter, and is happily snapping away while Sofia was competing. After Sofia disappears, he starts going through the photos, thinking he sees a man in them. Teresa wants them.
She returns to the house after tracking the car her daughter was in to examine the photo. She recognizes him as an old enemy, César. She refuses to elaborate on her past to protect Pedro.
Her earlier find leads her to a conversation with another old enemy, Epifanio Vargas (Humberto Zurita), a former narco who is running for office. He’s the one that Cayetana was talking to before. He wants Teresa to return to Mexico and fix the problems she caused previously. She agrees in order to get her daughter back, using the trip Francesco mentioned during the competition as a way to get there. Before she leaves, she tells Pedro he’s made her very happy and she’ll never forget that. She has a last drink to say goodbye to Maria Dantes, and welcome back La Reina del Sur before boarding a plane. Unknown to her, her daughter is locked in a cage in the same plane.
